I use AgileMessenger. Works like a champ, connects to all the services this does, has a small memory footprint, and is free.

Does anyone know what kind of data transfer instant messaging incurs? I'm on a 1MB a month plan, should I get an unlimited plan before even considering IM on the go?

I used Agile for a while, and it seemed to be very light on the packets. I'd suggest trying it out for a while and gauging how much you like it before upgrading to a better plan. For me, MSN didn't work so it was pretty much a no-go from the get-go.
