The companies said this is the first time an automaker has included a Bluetooth-based communications system in an automobile. The new system uses Bluetooth to read information from the SIM card that is part of GSM mobile phone networks, the companies said in a system. ...A number of functions, such as the phone's address book, can be accessed using an external keyboard and buttons on the steering wheel, the companies said. The system also integrates voice control."

I hope this system doesn't lock the owner into using a Nokia phone. :? I would hate to be stuck with a phone (or car for that matter) because of the built-in hands-free system. Luckily for me, my Smartphone has a very functional Voice Tags application for finding and dialing a contact without having to use the address book, keypad, or take my eyes off the road. So the new Passat's built-in system doesn't really offer me much 8)

Awesome! Let's hope this feature shows up on U.S. bound Passats. I'm a current Passat owner and will definitely be taking a look at the new Passat when it shows up this summer.

It s not really new; my BMW already has BT but unfortunately it does not work with my Motorola MPX 220. As long as companies will cripple BT connections and functionalities they will doom a good concept.
