It doesn't add too much weight, or bulk to your device, and 20 feet seems like a pretty good distance. This would be a good addition to those laptop locking cables that I've never trusted. What do you guys do to protect your gadgets?

How I keep my gadgets today after losing some over the years? A lanyard/wrist strap system from OP/TECH (http://tinyurl.com/3j3xa) for my PDA/smartphone/MP3 player/digicams - and yes, even for my notebook.

The lanyard/wrist strap system I use is modular. I have multiple securing ends (or system connectors, as OP/TECH calls them) that are permanently attached to the devices, with the lanyard/wrist strap itself semi-permanent around my neck and wrist. This means I can attach any of the gadgets to either the longer lanyard or shorter wrist strap when they are out, which in effect creates a "reminder tether".

How does that protect my stuff? It simply reminds me to take them along whenever I get off my ass. They are all thrown into my Dicota backpack including the notebook - yes, even for a trip to the john.

Inconvenient yes, but extremely effective - also one less battery-powered gadget to carry/lose :wink:

Sounds like a good solution, but what if there is no eye-let on the device for the securing end?

Hmm, interesting poser ... It never occured to me that some electronic devices we carry do not have strap eyelets, because I have them on all the ones I own. Except the notebook of course ... where I just fabricated a nylon loop for it :) Mind you, it's not there so I could the 10lb. monster off my neck - I just need a point where I can attach the lanyard/strap as a reminder that it's there.

I did have some plastic 3M-adhesive eyelets that were attached to my old PDAs, but can't recall where I got them now. They are extremely strong and will more than keep the relatively light electronica hanging securely off the lanyard, though.
