I'm very impressed with the SMT5600 and I would like to get one but I have a few problems. I don't want to pay the ~$350USD to get an unlocked, no service plan version; especially when it's $50 from Amazon with an AT&T service plan. My problem is that I live in Cincinnati, OH where we don't have "AT&T" coverage, but we do have Cingular here (and T-Mobile for that mater). Could I sign-up for a plan in another zip code, say Columbus, OH and then get my plan transfered over to a Cingular Cincinnati plan?

I got my smt5600 on ebay for $170. Its a refurb but I chose a seller with a good track record and 7 day return policy. Most buy it nows are up around $250 so if you want a great deal you need to get down in the trenches and bid. Then you can unlock the phone yourself for $40 at http://www.imei-check.co.uk/. If you look around the forums you'll see lots of people will atest that this unlocking method works without a hitch. Good luck!

It doesn't appear that you have any other choice but to sign up with Cingular, and this may not be a bad thing at the end. This is what I did:
1) Purchase an Audiovox SMT5600 on ebay (~$250). As spectulator mentioned above, choose a vendor with 99%+ feedback.
2) Purchase a cheapy phone with Cingular plan from www.wirefly.com with no money up front & pays you back the max amount of money.
3) Use http://www.imei-check.co.uk/ to unlock the SMT5600 (~$40)
4) Sell the cheapy new phone from wirefly.com on ebay. I kept mine to use while jogging or cycling (don't feel like thrashing my nice SMT5600 8) )
5) Put your old phone on ebay for extra cash.
6) Use the extra dough to buy a Ritek 512Mb 66x mini sd from HERE (http://www.meritline.com/ritek-ridata-66x-minisd-card-512mb.html) for cheap ~$49.
Btw, the SMT5600 is as good as the hype that I am sure you've been reading about. :way to go:
Good luck
