Problems with ActiveSync

I just got a new laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-S270P, Windows XP Pro, SP2).
After installing ActiveSync 3.8, and syncing with my MPx220 the internal computer phone modem does not work. Re-installing drivers and system recovery didn't help. In device manager modem query says the port the modem wants to use is being used by another program but the task manager is empty. Removing ActiveSync and re-installing the modem does work - but I'd sure like to be able to use both.

Has anyone else had this problem and found a fix ?

In Active Sync, click File / Connection Settings and turn off Allow Serial cable or infrared connection.

Does that fix things?

Unchecked one box and everything works now.
