"<i><b>This update is only for Cingular devices purchased in North America.</b></i>" so proceed with caution. In addition if you already have 1.3 (as I do) there is no need to perform this update. Good Luck!! :)

Has anyone installed this? I downloaded the file, and it's only 4 MB. Other ROMs I've seen for the Smartphone are usually 10MB or so. Also, the file name is Motorola MPx220 System Update v1.0.0.28.exe - What's with v1.0? I thought this was 1.3. Unless the ROM version is different than the version on the file. :?

Regardless, I have to give Moto credit for doing this. :way to go: Good Job guys, and I hope to see more updates in the future. :)

The 4MB file is the installer for the ROM Update tool. It seems the ROM update tool downloads the actual ROM from the internet. At least that is what one of the update tool screen said. That "Internet access will be required by the update tool. Please ensure your PC is connected to the internet."

If this is the latest ROM it's about time. Wouldn't it have saved Cingular and Motorola a heck of alot of bad publicity and extra cost if they made it available much sooner? All the returns a re-returns for what? It's amazes me.

this is great news!

although, i'm a bit hesitant to try it because i never had any volume issues with .325 firmware, what are the other plusses (besides the voicemail notification)?

I just finished my update and I am pleased to say it went off without a hitch!

Except the whole taking the battery out and reconnecting and then putting the battery back in and rebooting and all it took less time than I thought.

Haven't checked the camera yet but I can already hear a difference in the volume of ringers and people seem to hear me better.

Bout Dang Time MOTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How long did it take. I ran the executable and it installed another executable. I then ran the other executable and nothing seems to be going on. I seee that it's running but nothinbg seems to be happening.

Does anydody know what bugs or features this update fixs? I wasn't able to find anything on the Moto site listing what this update will fix or add to the phone. Doesn't update WMP 9 to 10 by any chance does it?

Did you already install the smartphone wireless modem? When that is finished it says that it is not compatible and would you like to quit and there you say install it anyway.

I would say it took maybe 10 minutes in all including the lreboot time and activesync load time. Just make sure you read all the instructions carefully.

If your computer shows a found new hardware prompt it will take a few extra steps cause thats where you have to install the wireless smartphone 2002 modem. Why its 2002 I do not know but if you follow all the directions and disregard the warning prompts during the install you should be okay.

By disregard warnings I mean anything you think pertains to the install.
If you read all the install directions firt they will tell you that there might be a few error messages or warnings and to ignore them.
If you do it exactly how they say it won't be hard.

I must say though it is a bit confusing the way it all plays out. Halfway through the install you have to power off and take out the battery then plus USB back in and then another few processes later you have to unplug and put batery back in and reboot twice.

It is well worth it though. I now have a somewhat usable camera too.

It seems to fix the volume and camera problems the phone was having in the original 325 ROM. I had exchanged mine with Cingular and got the update that way. It did greatly improve both of the above problems. It does NOT upgrade to WMP 10

well i've had my .325 firmware long enough and decided to dive in to 1.3. a few changes i have easily noticed so far since i had .325 for so long..

- the phone seems to start searching for a signal and closes signal at the time of the splash screen.. which very slightly speeds up the connection process when turning your phone on.

- voicemail notification is fixed!

- sounds are finally properly assigned with alerts.

i'll post more if i learn that there is more fixed.

There are no WMP10 licenses for the 220. There will be no ver 10 upgrades for the 220.

OK, I got it to work but says I have the latest ROM?????? When I bring up the about screen it still says I have Manufacturer: 0.343(AT&amp;T). I wonder if the manufacturer ROM versions are different for different providers. I'm really wondering what is up now....

You're never going to get a software update from Microsoft for the ROM of your Smartphone. The only places you should ever get an update is from the Motorola web site, or the Cingular site. If you find a update elsewhere, be very cautious. The only software updates you will get from Microsoft for your Smartphone would be for applications that you installed AFTER buying your device. Something along the lines of Pocket Streets and Trips.

This ROM update is for Cingular branded version only. I am guessing the updater tool checks to see that the previous ROM version is Cingular and older. :-)

Unless I missed it though it doesn't mention Cingular anywhere on the page. Just the "North America" reference.

Nice catch. I didn't see that anywhere on the main page so I assumed I was good to go......then I asw what you were talking about. Isn't AT&amp;T and Cingular one company now( :) )

I guess I'm doomed to have crappy volume and camera quality until they get a fix for us AT&amp;T customers with this phone. How much different could it really be. I would be willing to give up the mMode branding and the nice AT&amp;T background for a phone that works right.

You know the one thing encouraging here is the update came from Motorola and not from Cingular. Remember the i600 upgrade disaster? Not only did we have to wait for Verizon to get off its butt and release it. The process itself was a complete mess. Lots of paper weights were created that week. Since Moto is doing this you may indeed see an update sooner rather than later. We can only hope. :)

You are right about Motorola being the ROM provider. If AT&amp;T / Cingular were the companies providing the ROM then I could give up. Hopefully they'll have the flash ready soon.

I understand to look for FW version and HW version when getting a MPX220. What I want to know is with everything updated can you voice dial from BT headset. If not what good are the headsets. I have a V600 and all I do is push one button speak name and it dials, and the MPX220 is suppose to be the smartphone.

Jerry Raia

No you can't voice dial on the BT headset with the MPx220.

I'll answer my own question. Yes the phone remains SIM unlocked after the upgrade (assuming it was unlocked to start). I did the upgrade with a TMo SIM installed. No real problems (though SMS backup restore failed).

Here's the rub for me. Motorola does not offer this udpater tool for the MAC OS. While I currently use a Windows laptop I am moving to MAC for many benefits. But I am quickly finding that there will drawbacks unless I want to goto a Palm OS (no thanks). My wife will have a windows desktop but that is not the point (she would rather I NOT use her machine). The point is no where does it say on the Moto site (that I can find) that they do or don't support MAC. I have a back and forth with support going on.

This wouldn't be crititcal if it were for the fact that Cingular does NOT do ROM updates in the store.

Are there any other MAC users and what issues do you face?

My Version info:

Operator: 0.250.1003.0
Manufacturer: 1.30.0.0
Microsoft: 4.21.14315.0

Now, I am confused with you guys' nomenclature -- .325 and all that!

Do I need this update or do I already have it?

(Sorry if I sound dumb)

Cheers

ActiveSync is designed for Windows-based PCs, so the whole process would be pointless to try with a Mac anyway.

I read your post about the 1.3.0.0 ROM update for the MPX220. I've been trying unsuccessfully to get mine updated, but Cingular and Moto are no help. The link for the download on the Moto site at http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/hellomoto/experience/mpx220/flash/softupdate.shtml has been "temporarily unavailable" for a long time now.

I called Moto and they said it would not be up again until the first week of April.

Would someone who has already downloaded the updater be kind enough to email it to me? Or post it somewhere that I could download it? I am desperate to get the phone updated as the volume is incredibly low.

Thanks!

If the phone is branded Cingular (below the keypad, there should be a Cingular logo) then you can use the update. Even though you are on TMobile and have unlocked the phone.

But if the phone was branded AT&amp;T or was purchased outside America, then stay away from the update.
