Ok I did this twice, now I can't find where to change the device name of my phone. I want it to be some thing other than Smartphone on my PC. I did it before, but can't remember what I did.

Help,

Scott

I believe it done by editing the device registry. Though I remember there are some free tools to tweak the name too. Can't remember.

Install Smartione and point to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Ident.

As always I must give you the surgeon general's warning that registry editing is dangerous to your Smartphone's health. :-)

Thanks for the help, but I know I did not change it in reg. I'm not a true hacker, too chicken to edit my phone. I thought when I hooked up to ActiveSync the first time it let me do it. Who knows :?

Thanks,

Scott

On my old phone, I had to edit the registry, but on my 5600, I seem to recall it was in the settings someplace. I'll have to look around and double check this. :?

Are you talking about Start->Settings->Bluetooth->Bluetooth Settings->Device Name

I don't know if this affects the ActiveSync name or not or if it is strictly for BT. But I totally forgot about this one. But then the MPx220 does not have this settings screen. :-(

No, on my Audiovox, I could swear there is an option in the settings menu for device name. I could be mistaken, but I recall setting it. Unfortunately, I don't have my 5600 with me. I'm using the C500 today, and I can't find the option in the menus on this device. So I'll check when I get home tonight and let you know.

I'm shocked that Moto would omit another feature. Shocked!!!

Jerry it's statements like that, why Moto didn't send you the BT headset.

Oh I'm convinced they have read my accolades here and scratched me off their Xmass list.

Seriously though if that is true it means they read and took notice. I like that more than getting a stinky headset. 8)

No, it's not like that. Again, I could be wrong, but I really do recall changing the device name on my 5600 in the settings for the phone. My Tanager, and C500 don't have this option. So either I'm crazy (wouldn't be the first time) or it's something that Audiovox has added in. Will check tonight and let everyone know.

Ok Mike you better hurry because I'm about ready to start another Moto bashing fit they will make my previous ones pale in comparison!

You're goin' to like this one...

If you want to change the MPx220 device name, without editing the registry, that stuff always scares me. You can do the following:

1. Use ActiveSync to do it.
2. Set up a partnership with a PDA or something like that, but change its device name to SmartPhone.
3. Set up a partnership with the phone now, and ActiveSync will ask for a unique name. (The MPx220 default is SmartPhone)
4. Key in what you want. Now other devices will see your phone with this new name.

It may be easier to edit the registry, but here's a workaround.

That's pretty clever. :)
