View Full Version : Speak Up - Voice Activation and your Audiovox SMT5600

Speed dial is one of those features that has changed how I access those frequent numbers. Even without using speed dial, the smart search functionality in the Smartphone makes it really easy to find the contact your looking for. However both of these methods are long and cumbersome compared to the power of your voice. The Audiovox SMT5600 (and other HTC Typhoon based phones) has an extremely powerful voice dialing/activation program. Here's a quick step by step to get you up and running with your voice tags.<br /><br /> <!> Find the contact you wish to add a voice tag to.<br /> Select the contact, and highlight the phone number, URL, or email address that you would like to create a voice tag for.<br /> Select Menu from the right soft-key, and then select "Add Voice Tag"<br /> At the sound of the beep you need to say the word or words that you want to use. Remember to keep it short and simple.<br /> When you are done speaking the phone will automatically stop recording and playback the audio it captured.<br /> Select Done from the menuTo use a voice tag, simply hold down the volume down button from the homescreen, for a second or two. At the beep, say the phrase that you recorded for a voice tag. The phone will playback the matching voice tag, and start to dial your call, create an email, or open the URL - depending on what part of the contact you assigned the voice tag to. That's all there is to it. All things considered, it's a pretty simple process.<br /><br />What could be better than voice dialing your favorite contacts? How about voice activating your favorite application? This process also works for applications found in the start menu. Give it a try! 8)

Nice How-To. I never knew how to activate the tags once they were recorded. I could have read the manual, but then I wouldn't have enjoyed this article. Oh wait...there was no manual was there??? Anyway, Thanks!

Actually, there is. It's hidden on the CD that came with your phone. If AutoPlay doesn't kick in when you insert the CD, just look under \OEM\DOCS\SMT 5600 Manual FINAL 9-7.pdf

cool - nice article - I look forward to trying this once CINGULAR GETS THE AUDIOVOX PHONE - pant pant pant
sorry... slightly frustrated at the months of waiting for the marriage of a quality phone adn a quality network onlyto see it dashed against the sharp jagged rocks of merger technicalities (cingular will not resell ATT branded 5600 phones - so there is no way of getting one on the cheap/with contract :( )

I had no idea the manual was on the CD either. I downloaded it from Audiovox.
I think a lot of us already were using Outlook, you can download a newer version of ActiveSync, and unlike most my PDA's, the 5600 came with no freebie software to install. So many of us never bothered to even open the CD.

I didn't know it was there until I went looking for the manual to answer a question someone posted.
There isn't much else of value on the CD. Unless you want a link to Smartphone software, or WMP 9 download.

Very nice how to.
It works perfectly.
Now I have another reason to not put this phone down.
The CD is a very good resource.
Unless you are running MS Office XP, you can use the CD
to update your Outlook to the same version as MS Office XP.
It comes with a Product ID number so DON'T LOSE IT.
You'll need the Product ID number to activate your Outlook XP.
You can also download the latest version of MS ActiveSync from the MS website.

When I launch the install it says Outlook 2002, but isn't Outlook 2002 = Outlook xp? I'm running Outlook 2003 personally, and it is way better than any of the previous versions. :)

Nah. XP is different than 2002. Mostly visually as far as I can tell. I use 2003(XP) at work and 2002 at home.

I think you may have it backwards... It was Office 97, 2000, XP (AKA 2002), 2003.
I've always found it a little strange that my various PPC's and current SP ship with a previous release version of Outlook. I guess it is to control costs of the device and protect the price of the retail version of Outllook.

About many things you are. I've found many of your posts very helpful and informative as I've acclimated myself to my new 5600 and I appreciate it.
But this time, you are wrong. (http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/prodinfo/compare.mspx)

What's in a name anyway???! :D
2003 & XP both end with an "eeeee" sound! Easy mistake! :D
I admit it....I've been strung along for all this time thinking the wrong thing! I blame Mike Temporale!
Thanks for correcting me AND for the kind words! :D

Outlook XP and Outlook 2002 are the one and the same.
Outlook 2003 is part of the MS Office 2003 family...

So how many voice prompts has everyone created now? I've got 4 setup. Just the 4 main numbers I'm always calling. 8)

To use a voice tag, simply hold down the volume down button from the homescreen, for a second or two.
If you have a BlueTooth headset, you can press the button on the side, wait fo hear the beep in the headset, and then speak the voice tag.
AFAIK, the 5600/C500/etc are the only WM phones that allow voice dialing over BT.
Sorry if this was covered in a previous post -- I breezed through them. :)

While I think its great,
I think I would prefer an actual voice recongnition program. Like Fonix or MS VoiceCommand.
Unforturnately they don't work over bluetooth. :bad-words:

The main reason I chose this phone and not a pocket pc phone or other smartphone is it's ability to do voice dialing from a Bluetooth headset. A fantastic feature that keeps the phone neatly hidden in my pockets most of the time but still allows me to place or take most of my calls throughout the day. :P
