Hi, I've been looking to toss my old phone in favor of the Audiovox SMT5600. Since Amazon.com is selling the SMT5600 for -$25 right now, I was thinking I should just purchase a $75 512mb mini-SD card and load my music on it instead of buying a separate $150 mp3 player.

Is this a viable option or is there something about the phone that I'm missing?

Not at all. Nothing that I can think of. I haven't put any music on my 5600 yet, but that's because I don't have a miniSD card yet. Where have you seen the 512MB for $75?

They're out of stock right now but the price is $53 for the 512mb.

Buy.com is selling at $54, but they're also out of stock.

PC Universe has theirs at $55.55, but... they're also out of stock.

Yeah, I guess prices have gone down a bit since I last checked, heh.

Thanks for the links, I'll watch them and see if I can pick something up.

I use my SMT5600 and 256MB Mini for an MP3 player and works perfect, I can’t even find any cons to tell you. Except that you should use a memory card reader to transfer your mp3s

Also can someone please post a link for a cheap audio adapter (I want to use my regular headphones)

Check out Pocket PC Techs (http://www.pocketpctechs.com/Accessories.asp?type=audio) or your local Radio Shack.

Thanks for all of the info guys! One more thing though, I just read on the CNET.com review that the SMT5600 limits you to 256mb on the miniSD card? Is that true?

"Though the handset has a MiniSD expansion slot, it limits you to 256MB of data (it also has 32MB of memory built in)." - http://reviews.cnet.com/Audiovox_SMT5600/4505-6452_7-31138516-4.html?tag=top

No it's not true. You'll be fine with 512 or more. :)

Anyone have any insights as to why my SMT5600 is at only 472kb of Flash Memory, and I am getting warnings on low storage? I deleted all in Space Maker, and reduced contacts from 543 to around 250 which only changed available Flash storage from 358 to to the 472kb.

I use my SMT5600 as a MP3 player (256 mini SD)... I even rigged semi water resistent way to float in my pool, sip drinks, and listen to a radio show I get recorded for me.

I have one and it works better than the MPX 220 on playing MP3's.
It comes with a headset and works as a standard mp3 player.

8O Semi-water resistent? You sure you don't want that to me 100% water proof?? ;)

I should have said. "Splash Proof" 8)

Anyone every stream mp3's to their phone? Though it's really easy just to synch up a much of mp3s.... 512 megs is quite a few mp3s.

Is it "Drop Proof" ?? That would be my major concern. What if it slips in? or gets bumped into the water? :(

Nah, my 512MB card seems to be more than enough for me, right now. ;)

I'm pretty safe with it :) I dont think it would survive a sinking though...

Interesting that we were excited about $75 512K miniSD when this thread started in late Dec. Now the front page has 1G miniSD for that price.

Just as an option BTW I found audio adapters at http://stores.ebay.com/esoTechTrix I'm happy with the ones i got from there for my SMT5600 and MPX220. As I mentioned before, they are not interchangeable.

It's interesting to see things change like that. And jeez, it wasn't even very long between!

 I'm usually pretty good at spotting the extra "." or "," in broken URLs. For some reason, I just couldn't figure it out yesterday.

Thanks :D

I'm usually pretty good about making sure my links work too. Sorry 'bout that. It was a particulary tiny period though.

Excuse the stupid question, but is the headset that comes with the SMT 5600 supposed to only have sound from one ear, or is mine broken? I can't imagine why they'd give me a headset with two ear-buds if only one side works, but I wonder if I'm doing something wrong or what..

Thanks!

Can you use a Bluetooth headset as a headphone? If so, does it sound good? Or is BT 1.2 too slow for audio?

Most definately it should be stereo. Is it the set that came in the box with the SMT? You said that, but was it new? Sound out of one side is what I get if I stick a headset made for my MPX220 in the SMT5600. Also, are you sure you have it plugged in all the way?

Can you use a Bluetooth headset as a headphone? Not sure if this can work on a smart phone. Neither my SMT5600 or my MPX220 will route all sounds to the headset when it is connected. Both my PPCs will do that though. Maybe there is some hack that lets this work.
If so, does it sound good?No
Or is BT 1.2 too slow for audio? It's not the speed of 1.2 that's the problem. There are very good BT Stereo Headsets out that use it. The profile and protocol that is designed for headsets is designed to transfer voice and some commands (dial, hang up), not quality music. There is a different profile the stereo headphones use, A2DP. I do hear about folks making use of a regular headset for audio books.
