Kris,

I've been looking for an email program since I've had my phone. I've settled on a java based app that seems to work well. It works well and retrieves my messages quickly. The only knock I have against the app is that I have to initiate the mail retrieval process.

I downloaded the demo for Profimail. The program works fine except I find that it takes forever to download and even longer to log off the server. I only downloaded the headers. Also, the program seems to be slow to respond to key/button strokes. I even rebooted my phone and only loaded the program and still find it slow.

I do like the ability to pull the email and the ability to present messages in HTML.

Did you have the same experience Kris?

Even though I was excited about the HTML message capability. And downloaded the app. I was bogged down by the different UI. And the way the text input was implemented. I got side-tracked. :-(

I will give it a try later today and post back that information.

BTW what kind of mail server should I test for POP3 or IMAP4?

Kris,

It's pop3...some a/c's are hosted by Versizon and the rest are by Charter. So I'm using later carriers for email.

I also found when the app is pulling info, I can hardly use another app because the phone is running so slowly,

I'll email them and see if they know about these speed issues and if they have a patch or something out there.

I just searched for Profimail and found a more recent version...1.31.

I've installed it and will let you know if there is any improvement.

I had problems with the password entry in Prof. It doesnt show the ascii at all, even for a moment. There is no way to tell with a multi key press if you got the wrong letter.

I noticed that too Jerry, but knowing how many button presses for each letter, it wasn't too difficult to key the passwords in.

Also, I had the phone memorize my passwords...that way I just type them using T9 and I bypass the multi-key troubles.

Good point. Except when the keystroke doesnt take. Then you have no way to know. The T9 is a good idea. :)

Yeah, the T9 should do it for you, I hope.

It's also nice for long cryptic passwords like I use.

Sorry for the slow response. Should have posted this last night.

It does seem to run slow, even with only header download. It was taking 5 seconds or so for each header. I noticed that the globe would stop spinning in the popup dialog that shows the numbers of headers/mails downloaded.

It seems like the graphics may be slowing it down.

Also I noticed that when this app is running even though I am typing stuff in, the screen would timeout and blank out.

Took me forever to figure my password. I took your advice and trained T9. Well it took me a while to figure out the T9 mode as well.

I want the HTML message viewing capability. But this mail client is way too fancy (rather not fancy) for me.

BTW this was on an SP3i.

One possible danger of using the T9 for this, I don't think the contents are encrypted. With SmartPhone viri just around the corner it might not be a good idea in the long run.

Yeah, it's a shame about the speed. I've written the developers and I hope to hear from them soon.

Look into http://www.reqwireless.com/emailviewer.html

It's a java app. I bought it and currently use it. It allows for HTML as well as PDF attachments (I'm told).

Pretty fast, but it doesn't have the ability to pull messages...so you must train yourself to check email. I hope someone writes a decent app soon. Profimail has released ver 1.31, so maybe they'll work on the speed issues.

Lasher, you're absolutely right. I guess I should stop using T9 soon.

My major gripe with ProfiMail is the user interface. I like consistency. And the UI on this app is totally different from anything else I have seen. I have been a long time Smartphone user, so my eyes are used to a kind of interface.

I wish some one would come in with a plugin for the Pocket Outlook (like HTTP Mail Provider and Cingular XPressMail plugins) that will enable HTML mails.

Kris I agree, I have never understood why HTML emails are so elusive on all pocket devices it seems. It's not like MS doesn't know how to make the software!

Kris & Lasher (sorry, Jerry...I have to get used to that), other than HTML & PDF files attachments, my biggest problem with the built in outlook email client is that certain email accounts I use are problematic. I always receive an error trying to log onto those accounts. I spoke with both ATTWS (wireless carrier) and Verizon (email host) trying to straighten out the problem and got nowhere. But with all these other email apps, I have no problem using those email accounts. Go figure.

Interesting :-)

And I should recommend ClearVue for viewing Attachments. It is a must have app.

Luckily MPx220 ships with a File Viewer and I believe it does PDFs. (?) But ClearVue is great for SMT5600 or other Smartphone users.

I'll second that Kris, ClearVue is very good. The built in File Viewer does indeed open .pdf files and does a decent job of it.

have you tried the profiexplorer that comes with the mail application, its not bad and has a built in word and text viewer, it may have been better appreciated if it fully integrated with the phones UI, however with them prokviding for various platforms I can understand why it was created this way
