If you log into your AT&T account, you're now given an option to upgrade your phone to Cingular service. Basically, they terminate your AT&T account without an early termination penalty and then sell you a new plan & phone. There's a $18 activation fee plus the price of the phone.

I'm pretty happy with my AT&T plan & coverage, so the only benefit seems to be the Cingular data plan. It seems you can get unlimited Internet for $19.99/month (i.e. their Media Works package).

Before I switch, I'd be interested in anyone's experience using GPRS on Cingular with the SMT5600.

Thanks.

I'm also interested in anybody's answers/experiences, as I am considering purchasing the SMT5600. I'm a current AT&T customer, so the plan would be to get the 5600, unlock it, then switch my plan to Cingular (and pick up a free backup phone in the process) to save $10/month (data plan is $5 less and the National Voice plans price differently too).

Also, what happens to Mmode? I don't use it anyways, but will the icon still appear or can the software on the phone be removed?

I unlocked mine and am on Cingular. I signed up for the Media Works plan yesterday and am waiting for it to activate (says may take up to 72 hours.) I'll post once I am on.

ooops I didnt see this reply.

I am up and running fine! It works like a charm! It is a bit faster than my XDA was via Cingular wireless. E-mail works well and is quick enough. Connecting to the internet takes about 10 seconds and holds the connection well.

windmiller - are you in the US, or overseas? Just curious, as some people seem to have issues with internet access, the 5600, and Cingular.

Can you outline the steps you took to get the phone working on Cingular? Did you run into any gotchas or other weird issues setting up the connection?

I would assume he/she is here since they are using Cingular....

Sorry again for the delyed response, I travel alot but no excuse cuase I have my SMT5600 right?

I did not run into any problems setting it up. I got the settings of the forums here and they are as follows. I also ran into some additional settings as well. I have unlocked and setup Cingular Media Works on three SMT 5600's, one of them I am doing as we speak. I was in Washington and Kansas earlier this week and was using the Internet with great results!

I am compiling all the different SMT5600 Cingular Settings for GPRS, WAP, MMS, etc and will post them here later tonight......

OK, it seems like I'm on the same boat as all of you.

I have an SMT5600 and currently have ATT Wireless and want to switch to Cingular - primarily because their signal is much stronger in my area than ATT's service.

I am curious about on thing, other than unlocking the phone and updating the data settings, do I have to replace the SIM in my phone or is the one that ATT supplied fine?

After the unlocking and switching the service (I assume just a call to Cingular?) will my phone default to the Cingular network?

As far as unlcoking goes, I found a couple services for around $60/$70 as well as one for $36 http://simlock.c500-unlock.com/. Has anyone found any that are cheaper?

I would go with http://simlock.c500-unlock.com/
I have unlocked all of my SMT5600 using there service and there support is incredible!

Unlocking the phone is the only thing you have to do and then you can use your AT&T SIM card.

Really dumb question?

Ok, so I unlcoked my phone (thanks windmiler) and now I would like to switch to Cingular - what is the best/quickest way to go about that?

CINGULAR GPRS SETTINGS for Unlocked SMT5600

I have tested and am currently running all three of these on a unlocked SMT5600. I am still putting together the settings for MMS and testing the GPRS Accelerated to see how much faster it is. I'll post once I am done.

*There is a second set of WAP settings that are supposed to work as well, I am not sure what the difference is, once I find out I will list them.

When you say the Carriar is showing up as AT&T, do you mean on the top left corner of the Home screen? If so thats normal, whatever network you happen to be on at the time is going to shop up. Mine reads T-mobile right now because I am out of range of Cingular.

IF thats not what you mean the only other thing I can think of is that you need to go into your data connections adn make sure you delete the AT&T profile that comes on these phones.

Here's a strange one...
I switched over tonight at a converted AT&T store in Mount Laurel, NJ. Painless as can be and a much better experience than the Cingular store! They knew more and were much friendlier and eager to please.

I signed on to the $19.99 unlimited Media Works package.

I entered the settings as listed above.
GPRS and WAP.

I can not get any access using the GPRS settings in IE nor email.

But I can surf and send/receive mail using the WAP settings.

Any reason for this??? Is Cingular like AT&T where it is WAP based like mMode?

I have a AT&T software branded SMT5600. Yesterday, I went to my local Cingular store to make the switch. I had previously already had my phone unlocked at the website mentioned in a previous post.

Everything seems to be working fine except recieving SMS. I can send SMS with no problems. I can surf the web using internet explorer. I can log into MSN messenger.

Has anyone else been able to recieve SMS messages on cingular using an SMT5600? I have heard people mention a "Messaging Center" phone number, but I haven't been able to find any detailed information. Where is this number configured at? I am assuming it is configured on the sim card.

If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

When you switched, you should have had to move your phone number over, correct? Part of the Cingular activation process would have been to send your phone a text message telling you to turn the phone off and on.

Did you go thru that?

The number IS indeed on the SIM. I am receiving and sending text messages just fine.

Goto:
Start>Settings>Phone>Call Options

My SMS Service center number is +13123149810

Thanks for the reply encece.

Yes, I have been through all of that. The welcome SMS message from cingular came through just fine. I don't think the SMS from cingular told me to turn the phone off and then on again. However, I have reset the phone several times since then.

My call center number is the same as yours. Thank you for helping me find that.

I wonder what the problem could be. I should power up the free cingular phone I bought and see if I can recieve SMS on that.

Hopefully that will help me narrow down the problem.

Thanks Again,
Sean

I did have some problems sending SMS the first 2 weeks I had the SMT5600 but now its working fine.

encece,

Try the Accelerated settings and see fi that works for you. I double checked the settings and they are the same as listed on other sites and the same as I have entered them.

dsmith6281,
The settings above are case sensitive, so you may want to check that as well.
