Mobile Phone Tools is an aplication utility for Motorola Phones. Handango.com
sells it. If you go to motorola.com, alot of the data kits say "mobile phone tools"

I'm having some trouble using the mpx220 as a modem (whether hardwire thru the usb cable or thru a bluetooth connection.

I think that a new version will be out soon, because in their list available phones, the mpx220 does not show up. I used standard motorola gsm driver but no luck. I have the CD that came with the mpx220 so I'm pretty sure the drivers are in there, but they may be in the wrong directory????

any help on this would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, Mobile Phone Tools does not yet support the MPx220. I was disappointed, too. But there is a way out... I'm using a Dell and a HP Laptop to connect via BT and the Internet through the MPx220. Here's how:

****************************************************************
MPx220 Dial-up Networking Settings
****************************************************************
Follow the AT&T doc for the MPX200, works for T-Mobile on
the MPX220:
http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/pdf/MPx200modem.pdf

Connection String:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet3.voicestream.com","",0,0

Dial-Up Number:
*99#

********************************************************************
If your APN is "wap" or "internet2", change the Connection String to match.

Good Luck!

- Jim

Ah, that would explain it. I don't have a Moto phone.

While Mobile Phone Tools does not yet support the 220, it may in the future. That software is updated quite often. You can update it live from within the program.

I don't understand why you want mobile phone tools for the MPX220. It syncs with Outlook which is required for MPT anyways. I am about to remove my copy and most likely sell it since it nearly trashed my laptop. The unsigned modem drivers that loaded messed it up.

Mobile Phone Tools is for Motorola phones that are based on Motorola Software. The are used to allow modem use, sync and transfer contacts or appointements.

The MPX-220 is a Microsoft Mobile Smartphone. It uses ActiveSync, included with the phone, to sync with a Windows Desktop and Microsoft Outlook (also included with the phone). Built into Smartphone 2003 is a modem application with drivers for Windows on the CD.

You do not need Mobile Phone Tools and it will not work anyway.

I understand now about the mobile phone tools dilemma.
I will not use MPT.

I can sync with my outlook on my desktop, however I cannot use
my mpx220 as a modem either thru direct cable or bluetooth.
I managed to "query the modem" but that is as far as I got.

I then called Cingular for help and they told me that I have to buy
a data connect option. I have the media works package and I thought
that it would be enough.

When I asked for the initiialization string, they acted like I was from Mars
or something. I was also told that if I was to get transferred to tech, that
I would have to call from a phone other than the mpx220.

After being on the line with them for over 35 minutes and then told to wait
for a manager for another unknown amount of time, that was the straw
that broke my camel's back, so I HUNG UP THE PHONE!!!

Way too much hassle from Cingular....WTF???

Does anybody out there in "smartphonethoughts" land know how to configure the mpx220 to act a a modem with Cingular's service?
What is the correct init string and do I need a password?

PLEASE HELP!! :bad-words:

i am running in to this same problem.....i actually discussed this with Kris Kumar on an earlier thread...
he seems to be the only one to get it to work....

http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6674

(bluetoothmodem)

i used to connect through my v600 either directly dialing in to earthlink or through cingular and
not incur charges because i was not downloading to the phone....
i was only able to do that after the same long wait times...
making it to a Product Management Center
Specialist/Analyst III(not sure what the 3 stands for)....
she talked me through some changes in the web settings ( which is why they want you to call in
from another phone).....of course i failed to record all those changes, because i thought they
would be stored on my sim card, before exchanging the v600 for the mpx220...
so i am back to square one....i have exchanged a few e-mails and phone calls with this person again
who is working with the engineers to figure it out.....after reading posts today re: bluetooth hidden
profiles and pairing order i am scared it may never work....

http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6736

(bluetooth)

may be forced to exchange for the v551 which
is obviously not as "overengineered"also, i forwarded the cingular "specialist" the link to this
webpage and mpx threads about a week 2 weeks ago and she was blown away....
she was considering not releasing through cingular but maybe put the fixes in motion i'm not sure....
anyhow i will post back if it gets resolved and please do same if you get it fixed first..i really
want to keep this phone, especially since the volume situation appears to be resolved.....

Now, I do not have a motorola smartphone, yet.

In theory it should be easy though...

1) Placed the CD in the CDROM drive.

2) Connect the phone via USB to your computer.

3) It should be recognized as a modem and automatically search and load the modem drivers from the CD.

4) Create a Dial UP connection for Cingular... Start:Settings:Network Connections. Use the defaults. The Dial String should be

*99***1#

5) What happens next I can not test...

6) To connect via USB to GPRS either:
Dial using the new Dial UP connection you just created.

or

Put the smartphone into data call mode
Dial using the new Dial Up Connection

7) After this is working you can experiment with bluetooth. The details will depend upon your particular Bluetooth interface...

One think I forgot, you will need a user name and password with your dial up connection

User name: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1

Needs to be all caps...
