View Full Version : SMT5600 and Server Sync with Exch 2003 svr.

I just got the phone yesterday and like it alot. The one thing I haven't
been able to get working is over the air sync for Outlook. Works fine when connected to the desktop, but no matter what combo of servername, password and login credentials I use, it will not connect. I am able to connect over OMA with the phone so I know the server is ok.

Do I need to open any specific ports on the NAT?

The server is running Win 2003 and Exch 2003 svr w/all updates and patches applied.

Any help would be appreciated.

What error does it give you?

I had the same problem, and the only way I could get it to work was to disable the certchk feature that makes the client check the validity of the server cert. It will still set up the SSL channel and encrypt the communications, so I'm fine with it for now. It performs this check when you go in through OMA, but your browser will let you bypass it and continue. The ActiveSync "client" can't do that, so it just fails.

When I tried to install the proper root cert on the phone, it told me that since the phone is "app locked" it won't let it install.

I'll dig up the article and associated app that disables the certchk and post the links.

When you access OMA is it over SSL?

I had to disable cert checking on my phone as well (The cert authority used by the SSL cert on my Exchange server is not recognized by Smartphone 2003.) The program and instructions to do this are at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=D88753B8-8B3A-4F1D-8E94-530A67614DF1&displaylang=en

Also, in your Exchange environment are you running a single server for both your mailbox server and OWA/OMA? (i.e. no front end/back end setup) If so this may apply to you:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817379
(Probably not an issue for you as this affects OMA as well.)

Tried what you suggested and disabled that. The phone will now do a server sync over the USB cable, but still won't sync when unplugged. I get an INTERNET_29 error.

My server does not use SSL and it is the only one in the domail.

TIA... Bill

Found this through Google... We'll see if any of this stuff works.

Sorry, had to work late today so someone beat me to it.

Here's the MS article relating to the errors generated:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330465

The article you found is the one I actually used to help troubleshoot mine.

Good luck with it! It's well worth it once you get it working. :-)

Thanks to both of you for he assistance. I installed an SSL cert on the server and now have working server sync!

And JC, it was worth the pain...

Thanks again guys.

Sorry for jumping in late with a general question, but way back when, I swore Microsoft said that they'd make WM Smartphone 2003 so it could sync over port 80 (i.e. not need SSL) :?:

I believe you could make it work using the RPC over HTTP, but I'm not sure.

I guess I now have something new to try. :-)

I've used the RPC over HTTP setup for connecting desktop Outlook to the E2k3 server using 80 and it works like a champ. Although, for the most part, I'm pretty happy with just using OMA when I have a full browser running.
