But how does the software work? Can the Audiovox SMT5600 customers install Intellisync software on their desktop PCs and become mobile? Or do they have to depend on the IT department to install an enterprise application? If it requires the help of IT department or an enterprise application, then most of the new SMT5600 users will not benefit from this product support. Why cannot <i>all</i> Smartphone users get "push" E-Mail and "over-the-air" PIM sync as a standard, out-of-the-box feature? Why do we have to depend on the IT department and the carrier? :?

Actually, exchange server support sync over the air of mail, contact and calendar (but not notes or tasks). It can also be setup to be Alway Up To Date (AUTD) - thus making it a "push". Push happens by way of specially-formed SMS message exchange uses to notify your device that there are new items to sync with.

I should know - i use it for last two days with my employer-provided exchange server. If you do not have exchange server acount, you can buy one on the net (search for "exchange hosted account") for i belive as little as $5/month and up. I can be wrong on exact figures here, do not quote me.

The Intellisync thing sounds cool, but my company already has a BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, so we're waiting for the BlackBerry Connect software for being able to push email/calendar to our PocketPCs/Smartphones.

It doesn't make sense to setup a second infrastructure. It's expensive and something else that needs supporting.

We also have a BES at work. I'll gladly stop carrying my Blackberry around and use Blackberry Connect instead!

That was my concern too.

Actually should have made my questions a little clear. I guess in the morning I was not typing what I was thinking. :oops:

The thing that I wanted to mention was why can't the Smartphones come with all the sync solutions. Let the customer choose the one they need.

If that is not possible remove the need for the carrier to support a sync method. So that we can choose our own sync enterprise server and clients. This whole nexus between the sync technology and carriers is bad.

That's why I like Exchange sync better, atleast it is not carrier dependent. I hope BlackBerry connect is carrier independent.

We have both BES and E2k3 at my office.

I too was waiting for the "Blackberry Connect" client to replace my BB. I have all three device types represented, a XDAII (WM2003PE), an Audiovox SMT5600(Smartphone2003), and a RIM 6710.

I liked the 6710 ok, just big and clunky. Good for messaging and some light calendar work, but not very well integrated with the Outlook/Exchange combo. Besides, I like having the flexibility of having a music player built into my "work" device. Less to carry, and I don't look like I'm wearing Batman's utility belt. :-)

Anyway, "waiting" for the BBC client, I set up the E2k3 ActiveSync to test it out. Worked like a champ. As mentioned in a previous post, it only syncs the Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts, but it works GREAT, and has proven extrememly reliable on both my XDAII and SMT5600.

In the process, I asked a rep from our provider about the BB Connect client. I was told that RIM is putting all their focus on BES 4.0, therefore, they don't know when the BBC client will be out. That's why so many devices that were supposed to ship with it, didn't, and they have no idea when it will be available.

To summarize, I just thought I'd let you guys know not to hold your breathe for the BBC.

Well, crap. LOL I'm anxious to see the BB Connect, but I'm just as anxious to see BB 4.0

Unfortunately I work at a Lotus Notes (on an AS/400 -- could it GET any worse?) shop, so ... no Exchange syncing for me. :(
