http://www.motorola.com/mdirect/hellomoto/experience/mpx220/flash/index.shtml

Finally the moment that we have all been waiting for, now don't get too excited, this news post is not announcing the availability of MPx220 in your local stores. All I want to say is that, Motorola has taken the wraps off the hellomoto.com product page for the MPx220.

Of course by now we know the feature list like the back of our hands. But if you are like me, I am sure you will still want to read through all the pages on the site, hoping to find the launch date hidden somewhere or maybe some new feature. :) There is a cool 360 degree view of the phone. Since we cannot lay our hands on the real one, may I suggest playing with the virtual one. You can flip it open, flip it closed, tilt it, bring it closer...dreaming already? I bet. Motorola will be offering free Bluetooth headsets to the first 1000 customers who register their phones, when it becomes available. Meanwhile don't forget to register for the updates.

Looks like it will be available in only Silver color.

And what is "Mobile Concatenation", found this under Full Specifications > Messaging Features > Mobile Concatenation ???

BTW, did notice something which no one has pointed out. MPx220 will feature iTap, instead of the traditional T9. iTap one big improvement over T9, it can complete words for you, i.e. T9 shows only the combinations for only the keys you have punched in. iTap will use the punched in key combinations to see if it can complete the word for you even if it has more letters than the number of keys you have punched in. This is something I wanted, with this I can email/sms faster.

Good to see more details on the Moto site. However I had been told that the 220 was coming in three colours.

After much see sawing (between MPx220, MPx, BenQ p500, iPaq 6315, etc.), I've decided the MPx220 is the device for me. So, its great news that the 220 has its own page now at Moto's site......means we are (finally) getting close.

One achilies heel of the 220? Why of why did they not make this an EDGE device? Its so advanced in so many other ways, and EDGE is hardly new now, I don't enderstand why they didn't include that.

Even without EDGE though, the MPx220 is the device for me.....now I'm just treding water until October.

Why? I believe its because Motorola is planning on a sequel to the 220, the MPx240 ;-) The wait would be longer than the one we are going thru for the 220 :-)

What is with the 1000 limit on the phone book, as stated in the specs. Have not seen any smartphone limit that as of yet, has always been a function of available memory.

This must have been put in place to reduce (or silence) the support calls generated by folks with huge address books, complaining slow CallerID look up. Now with the PhotoID feature standard on the MPx220, I am sure there is a performance hit.

That would be my guess. Otherwise I don't see any reason for 1000 contacts limit.

That is probably the reason. My thought, though, is that people who need anything close to 1,000 contacts on their cell phone really need to simplify their lives. I don't try to run a telemarketing business from my phone, and maybe their are people who do, but I have never needed more than 100 contacts. Just family, close friends who I call at least monthly, and a few key colleagues, co-workers and employees. Let the key managers and other contacts get your message out to everyone else. You don't need the entire company's employee list on your phone, do you?

On the one hand, 1000 contacts does seem like an arbitrary number. On the other hand, I just looked and I have 288 contacts in Outlook, and it seems like a TON. The vast majority of them I don't use frequently. So I would agree those with 1000+ contacts may have overly complicated lives.

Bottom line? I guess the limit won't affect me for a long time (if ever), and I'm guessing the true is same for most people.

I am not sure that "1000 entries" means 1000 contacts; if each phone number and email address is considered one entry the number of contacts you will be able to enter will be much smaller. On the other hand one of the strongest point of the MS Smarthones was the ability to seamless sync with an Outlook file. I have more than 700 contacts in my pst file, each of them with multiple phone numbers and some with multiple email addresses. I am not going to shrink my contacts list just because Motorola is unable to make things right; I will stick with my 200 hoping that the MPX will not have this limit.
Btw one of the reason why I love Outlook is because it really simplifies my life
Just my opinion of course.

so it sounds like this is a limitation that the hardware vendor put on as opposed to the capabilties of the OS - is that correct? I don't seem to recall any of these limitations in the PocketPC devices...

Not that I think I'll run into any issues, but I just don;t enjoy seeing "limitations". If the limitation is 1000 contacts then I'm thinking that I'll be OK - but like someone else mentioned, if it's 1,000 enteries... I also ahve multiple numbers for each individual contact...

It is interesting to see the discussions on this and other sites about the poor reception on the MPX 200. Everyone seems to like the features and functions of the phone but people are passionately ticked off about the fact that the service (reception) is so bad. Now everyone is talking about the new MPX and the MPX 220 and all we hear about is the new features (Quad Band, Blue tooth Win2003 etc.) and how much they are going to improve the phone.

My question to anyone that has actually used the phone is this. Is the quality of the phone coverage/reception better on the MPX and MPX 220 than the MPX 200. If it is, I will buy the phone as soon as it is available.

thanks

I would like to know it too. In fact this question has come up before. But has not been answered. :-(

I am hoping (really hoping) that the protrusion at the top on the MPx220 is a horizontal antenna, which will improve the reception over the MPx200.

Well, someone send me a MPx220 and I will do a nice MPx220 vs MPx200 review. ;-)
