http://worldofppc.com/HWTests/minisd.htm

Andreas who presented us with a nice Motorola MPx220 Test Report is busy playing with a mini-SD card from SanDisk. And guess what device is being used to test out the mini-SD card, if you guessed the MPX220, you got it right.

The original review is in German, the Google translation of the article can be accessed here.

The interesting thing in the article is the photo of the mini-SD card with an adapter that will enable you to use the mini-SD cards in regular full-size SD slots. This is nice because I was worried, that once I switch to mini-SD cards, I will not be able to use them in the other devices I have that use the regular SD cards. Thanks to the adapter, I guess it makes sense to start investing in the mini-SD cards now. This way you will be prepared when the MPx220 is launched ;-)

Does anyone know where to actually BUY the Mini-SD card yet? Any clue if there will be a mini MMC card? I'd like to get a couple of MMC cards - I seem to recall that they are cheaper and faster than the SD format. Any truth to my recollection?

Cheaper and Faster they are. Although, there is no Secure in them, not that anyone uses the secure feature anyway.

possmann, I have seen them on the internet, but never in any brick & mortar establishment. Here's one place you might try:

The price is pretty good (256 MB for $56, free shipping, and no sales tax in Illinois, at least). They also have 128 MB and 64 MB sizes.

I haven't seen anyone who carries more that 256 MB, but I thought I read somewhere that 512's exist and that the 1 GB miniSD is on the horizon.

I would have expected them to be less. I've seen 512 SD cards for $113 CDN, and 256 SD cards for $40 CDN. ($1.00 USD = $1.30 CDN)

I need to start shopping where you do, Mike . . . :) I hope miniSD drops in price when there is a little more demand for them in North America. I don't know what devices use them right now, but I do know that the Mpx220 (which is what I want, especially with the possible Blackberry licensing I've read about here on Smartphonethoughts) isn't out yet. When that device hits stores, demand should climb and prices, I suspect, will fall once there is some volume profit to be made here.

It seems like CF cards are still the cheapest, and a SD of comparable size and speed is a few dollars more, and I suspect that the miniSD will always be a few dollars more than that, but hopeful it gets a little closer as time goes on.

When I cannot find an item, I use http://froogle.google.com

Search for SD + mini + 512
And don't forget to set the sort order to "price: low to high" in the left pane.

But I didn't find any reputed vendors.

The good thing is that SanDisk is selling its mini-SD with the adapter included in the package.

http://www.TigerDirect.ca  I think they have a US based site at http://www.TigerDirect.com But I can't tell you how good the prices are on the US site. I just haven't looked into it.

What really funny is when people start purchasing 512MB and 1GB miniSDs (which cost an arm, a leg and something else), loading it with all the multimedia stuffs they want, so they are fully prepared when mpx220 is finally launched .... and then motorola decided to replace the miniSD with a regular SD.

:P

If only maximus..

I'll finally take the plunge into SD when I get my MPx200, and now they're going to use mini-SD. And it's not like the MPx220 is THAT small to need mini-SD.

mini-SD here is about 40% more than SD for a 128mb card, and I haven't seen a 256 or 512mb version here yet. This is just sooooooo annoying.

Say NO to mini-SD (and any new "standard)!

That's why I'd be more impressed with an SD to MiniSD converter. Sure, it may look ugly, but at least users would have the option of keeping their current kit usable.

I'm past my "say no to miniSD" stage and have been assimilated -

It's here to stay and as long as they offer a slot for using the miniSD in a real SD slot I'm "ok" with it.

Frankly I'd like them to start producing the MMC - mini version taht is - becuase they are cheap and faster and I don;t think a whole lot of folks really use the secure feature anyway. I mean who is gonna secure 256MG of music files?
