It's capable of cutting & marking or engraving the following:

• Fabric & Leather
• Paper & Cardboard
• Plastic (sheet, film & molded)
• Rubber (natural, synthetic & foam)
• Wood & Hard Organics

Haven't you always wanted to put a design on your knife? I know I have. It's fairly expensive at $9995 USD, but I'm sure that less expensive versions will come out in a few years. I can also see some creative types starting up businesses based around a tool like this. Very cool stuff! Maybe I should request a review unit...

I used to work for a steel-rule cutting die manufacturer that I still have access to.

We used to make things out of 1/2 to 3/4 hard plywood. Cutting thru as well as etching. There's a cool burn effect on the cut edge as well...though the face of the piece never had a blemish. I believe they used to cuit thru aluminum as well, but I dont remember the limits. These were HUGE machines that could cut very large pieces. (here's a link... http://www.lasercomb.com/ )

Draw whatever you wanted in the CAD and have the laser burn it out. It was quite expensive at the time so we never did anything major.

That was some years ago and they are probably more advanced by now. I need to go back for a visit and see how far they have come.
