From the looks of it there is no external screen, unless it is cleverly hidden behind the lustrous outer covering on the front. How can any manufacturer release a clamshell phone with no external screen at this device level? I could see if it was an el-cheapo Emerson freebie, but this is supposed to be a high-end device. What gives?!?!

Using Babelfish to translate the page give very little information other than the pictures. Maybe pcpop.com is just getting around to this "old" news. All they say is Smartphone 2003, bluetooth and MMS.

Err.. don't blame me for this translation:

"Sells emits in namely the more Motorola MPx220 picture
Issues the date: On April 13, 2004 author/edition:NPC
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After Motorola MPx220 is Motorola continues MPX200 the second-generation Windows intelligence handset, already fried about its news year ago noisily, but the picture actually were much less than the writing, we found today have been more about this section product picture, first the full full fine sights again said.

Motorola MPX220 has used brand-new Microsoft the Smartphone 2,003 operating systems, this system and used Smartphone2002 the system Motorola MPX200 different occupying to strengthen to MMS and the blue tooth support."

Ok. I think I can paraphrase it.

Motorola will follow up the MPx200 with their second-generation MPx220. We found more pictures. Motorola will use Smartphone 2003, and incorporate MMS and Bluetooth Support.

How's that? :-D

MiniSD?

NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOO :twak:

Oh Please don't do it Moto!

Sigh - Just when I was ready to drop the cash on an i-mate a glimmer of hope comes along about the upgraded 200 in the form of the 220... alas to be dashed to the rocky shores and smashed to bits if the miniSD assessment is true.

Why oh Why?

Don't see the external pics in the ones above, but if you click on the 'middle of February" link in the OP, it has more pics where you can see an external display .. kinda. :D

Yes, there does appear to be an external screen:

Ah, thanks to you both for setting me straight. The black version makes it easier to tell there is an external display hidden behind the lustrous outer covering (a nice touch, I must say). Alas, the only thing that might tear me away from my great Verizon coverage is the MPx - and I just started a 2 year contract in November, so I'll probably be waiting for the MPxxxx. :P

Yeah what's up with the miniSD? Is that being used on the MPx and MPx100 as well?

I couldn't even find any cards for sale online... :?

The phone looks like a solid step up from the MPx200 though.

The MPx uses a regular SD, but the MPx100 uses miniSD. The miniSD is ok because it will fit in a regular SD slot with an adaptor. They really needed the miniSD to save internal real-estate. This isn't like a new design such as xD. miniSD and SD will co-exist, somewhat like Compact Flash was/is a sub-format of PCMCIA.

That is all fine and good, but it once again sets limits on peripheral expansion in the Smartphone market. The adoption of miniSD will allow manufacs to build smaller, lighter, memory enhanced handsets, but we loose the expandability into other fields such as GPS, WiFi, and non-integrated Bluetooth. Of course, some or most of this can be handled through either integrated Bluetooth or cable attachments, but with Bluetooth it is dependant on the stack, and cable peripherals are proprietary.

Off topic, but telcos do not see the benefit to their service by adding phones that have the added expandability because it limits their potential revenue streams. Cell data services are contingent on the fact that you use minutes to have a 'net connection, and charging a data rate on top of that. If they carry phones that have unfettered expandability, it will bleed the company of income. It is the archaic perspective, but one that we as consumers are faced with when looking at our current carrier-centric model of cellular communication in North America.

I asked our T-Mo Business rep if there were any MPx220 plans, and his reply was "look for the MPx100 in Q3".

Le Sigh.
