Have you ever been in a club and heard music that really added to the moment, but left the club not knowing what you had heard? Have you ever come across a music ad in a magazine, or seen a posted ad for an upcoming concert, and wished you could easily find out what the band sounded like or buy tickets? <br /><br />The MMID Service on cell phones allows consumers to quickly and easily identify music that they are listening to, or come across in print, using their cell phone. The system also provides for a mobile portal that allows the customer to reference their music collection from any internet-accessible mobile device. <br /><br />For music that is playing on the radio in the car, in a local bar, or at the gym, all the consumer has to do is dial a number and hold the phone near the music for about 15 seconds. The consumer will the receive a message to the phone with the song title, artist, and a sample of the song that can be listened to. MMID also enables the consumer to immediately purchase the song/album via their cellular phone. This is all powered by fPrint™, an advanced music fingerprinting technology that digitizes the sampled music, compares the sample to a comprehensive database and quickly delivers the appropriate information to the consumer."<br /><br />Sounds impressive, but this is a carrier service only, not an end-user product for consumers. I'd really like to see carriers adopt this solution though - it would be really useful in a lot of scenarios. I'd be willing to pay a buck or so to know who was singing a certain song I was listening to. Of course, I wouldn't have to do that if the darn DJ's would say who did each song.

There was a service like this about two or three years ago who's name I just cannot remember (I think it was called something like Yazoo or something); Anyway, that also worked by calling a number and playing the song down the line and it worked three out of four times.

It was also carrier independent (I think) and didn't need any special software (I think I used it on an old 7110 or J5e).

Wouldn't use it while driving though (Pc Plod may take exception), and a lot of the time it kept complaining that the music wasn't loud enough to hear it, and then that the music was too loud.

Handy nonetheless and could save me from having to ask the HMV staff what it is that's being played at the moment (I'm into Mahler and Zero7 at the moment).

That's pretty cool. It would be better if it could email me the song/artist info as I would forget it before I had a chance to write it down.

It sent the reply in a text which is almost as good as an e-mail - it even recognised a Carpenters song (which was on the radio, not in my collection ;-) )

There was a piece of hardware that was a best-seller on Amazon.com a year or two ago - I think it was made by Sony, and you put it on your keychain. You'd just press the button on it when you heard a song you liked, then when you got to your PC you'd connect it and through a Web site you'd select what radio station you were listening to, and it would tell you the song. Kind of complicated, and I haven't heard about that product in a while, so I don't know if it's around any more. Of course, it wouldn't work in Canada, so I never actually tried the darn thing.
