Jason’s recent review of his SPOT experience (http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,5082) got me thinking about how many different Microsoft based operating systems I run on my various machines and devices. The breakdown of my operating systems is listed below. These are all machines I use on a regular basis.

1. Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone
2. Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC
3. Windows XP Pro
4. Windows 2003 Server
5. Windows 2000 Advanced Server
6. Windows 2000 Pro
7. Xbox

Okay, so I haven’t had much time to use the Xbox recently, but it is hooked up, and I do play with it about once every couple weeks. Imagine if I actually got that Media Center PC and that SPOT watch that I’ve been toying with buying. 8O 8) When you step back and look at this, it’s pretty amazing how Microsoft has branched out over the last 5 years or so. And how much I have embraced it too! (I used to be an OS/2 fan years ago. :worried: )

So what's your operating system count?

Let's see...
1. XP Pro
2. XP MCE
3. 2000 Pro
4. 2000 Server
5. PPC 2003
6. PPC 2002
7. PPC 2000 - yup - good old EM500. :D

I think that is it. Actually, there is an old copy of 3.1 out in the plant chugging away with a 10 year old label program... 8O

Oh, wait! I forgot my old iPAQ 3650. It currently has PPC2002 on it. Well it is packed away, and I don't really use it anymore. So I guess it doesn't really count.

Okay, so I'm not an uber-geek like some, but my current count goes like this:

1) WinXP Pro (my box :D )
2) Win98SE (family PC :? )
3) Win95 (my work PC...can you imagine? )
4) WM2003 (iPaq 1945 :) )

I have had a Smartphone 2002 unit in the past, but that doesn't count for now, I guess. We have a Gamecube instead of X-box, mainly for my (young) kids. Now, if I could buy a copy of WinXP MCE, I might add that to my list, but I've gotten to the point where I would rather build than buy.....

I have:

PPC 2002
Smartphone 2002
XP Pro (home desktop)
Windows 2000 Pro (work laptop)

My girlfriend (same household, so I count them as a part of the total):

PPC 2000
Windows 98 (old laptop)

Besides that I also have two Linux machines at home, I have to admit these are becoming my primary used OS at home...

XP Pro
2000 Pro
2000 Server
Mobile 2002

Even have some ME and 98 running somewhere.....

The sad thing is that if variety is the spice of life, there's not a whole lot of spice going on here is there? That's why I like to expand my options with stuff like Linux, Symbian and so on.

Why get stuck in a rut? Life is too valuable to allow Microsoft (or any other mortal come to that matter) to be the words in the sugar-rock.
