View Full Version : What does your home screen look like?

Just thought this might be a fun thread, what does your current home screen look like? Any specific add-ons you like to use?

I don't have anything on mine beyond the basics, but I'll post a screen shot to start it off -

http://www.handecomputing.com/images/smarty_screen.gif

My theme changes based on my mood, right now it is morning though, so doughnuts sound pretty good. :) Of course, Krispy Kreme is good anytime of day, so this one may stay on longer...

It's usually one of the themes I've created for smartphonethemes.com

I'm using the Pocket PC remote display power toy, which while it was designed for the Pocket PC OS, it works with Smartphone too.

Here's mine, I've got a lot of info on here so let's go through it.
Background image is the badge of my local football team (soccer to you Americans) Stockport County FC.
Actual homescreen is a modified xml based on the Orange Full homescreen, I've given the message counts smiley faces :0)
put in links to my most visited sites
at the bottom is the alarm clock plug-in available on MoDaCo, it's very useful but I haven't managed to get the colour to go right yet :|

damn, can't seem to get the hang of putting the photo in. Can anyone let me know how I go about putting a photo on the net so it can be seen here?

You almost had it. You need the URL to the image itself. The URL you had was to the page with the image on it. I edited your post and added a link to the only image on that page. It appears to be a small thumbnail of the original image. Is that what you wanted??

Here's your original link:

Okay, a lot of you are running with smaller icons. How have you guys done that? I would lover to reclaim some space on the home screen.

 No, I'm afraid that didn't help me. :( What file is it in? I look around in a bunch of XML files, and I couldn't find an entry with the name="startmru".

Kris Kumar
02-24-2004, 12:33 AM
Search for files by the following name xxxxx.home.xml.

eg. Full.Home.XML

If you never tweaked the Home Screens. Look for the files under \Windows folder.

If you are using a custom Home Screen, they can be found here
\IPSM\Application Data\Home\

To modify the Screen. Make a copy the HomeScreen you like to your desktop. Lets say you copied Full.Home.XML to your PC. Then rename it to MyFull.Home.XML.

NExt open the XML in a notepad. Before you look for the MRU. Change the <title lang="nnnn"> Full Layout</title> to <title lang="nnnn">My Full Layout</title> for each Lang entry.

Then modify the MRU icon size.

Next Copy the MyFull.Home.XML to \IPSM\Application Data\Home.

Now launch the Program->Settings->Home Screen. And Select "My Full Layout" from the List.

Thanks Kris! I had about 70% of that right. I wasn't changing the name of the file or the title. I also didn't place it in the Application Data\Home folder.

I'm gonna mess around in here for a while and post an updated screen shot when I'm done. :D

The white text is kind of hard to read. I think it might be easier to read with a light blue, or grey text. :)

Jerry Raia
02-24-2004, 11:04 PM
I gave your idea a try, unfortunately other parts of the text became less readable as I changed colors. Its a problem when you have a background image with all those colors. Be nice if one could do an "or" color for the test so it would change with the image.

Mike Temporale
02-24-2004, 11:50 PM
I like that idea. It would be great to have a second color that is used if the first color is too close to the current background color. This would a nice to have, however I think I would rather have them focus on some other 'issues' first. ;)

I've customized the home-screen a litte bit to make it look more "Norwegian" even though SmartPhone is not available in Norwegian yet:
http://www.pdanorway.com/gammel/images/XML/Home.gif
I use a big clock because I don't wear an wristwatch, so I need to see the time fast and easy :-)

Here is the themes I've posted on SmartPhoneThemes (http://www.smartphonethemes.com/profile.asp?ID=37080), I'll post some more shortly.

I want that RemyJ shortcut stuff, may have to look into his XML and see if I can rip it out and into my XML ;-)

EDIT: Got it working :-) Will post new screenshot shortly...

Mine is actually a combination of all three plugins. You have to edit the xml to get it the way you want it.

Here is one with the new RemyJ plugin.
After editing RemyJ's shortcut plugin to work with my own .home.xml, the color on marked shortcuts are black no matter what theme I use.

Anyone know what I can put in my code to make it a different color?

At the top of the XML file there should be a series of tags labeled "color". My guess is that you will have to play with those tags.

Thanks for the comments. Took me a while to figure out XML coding for the home screen. What threw me for a loop was, I started off with a trial of Home Screen Designer. Which is great if you just want to put something together, without opening a home.xml file. However, don't use it as a guide to make your own. It creates some really funky coding. I think they've figured out how to create home screens entirely in negative coordinates! I was finally able to get what I wanted after scrapping it all and just starting from scratch, ditching all the padding, adding plugin by plugin, and following the MSDN guides and various web resources. Everything mapped out perfectly without a single negative coordinate.

A fun learning experience. A lot more trouble than a PPC, but a lot more flexible really too.

Anyway...

Foamy is a riot, or at least there is something wrong enough with me to thinks so. lol May not be work safe though. Nothing horrible, just curses his fair share. But he talks really fast, so it's hard to understand him unless you are paying attention.

What do you think of my Homescreen?

http://www.keirmeister.com/misc/cavern.gif

I made it myself from an image I found somewhere in Internet-world. The original image is called cavern.jpg, which I named the homescreen after. If anyone knows where the picture came from, please let me know, as I would like to give him/her (probably a him, eh?) credit.

Did you manage to get the other screens in the download to work?

I haven't used that homescreen in a while, but it looks sharp! I think I'll hav to switch back to it. ;) I don't recall any extra screens in the download, but it may be there. To get them to work, you have 2 options.

Option 1 - Rename the default background, then rename the background you want to use to the name that the default background had.

Option 2 - Edit the XML and find the line where it mentions the default background and change it to be the background you want to use.

Warning - I'm typing this from memory as my laptop isn't with me right now. I can double check this info once I get it back and let you know if there is anything I'm missing.

ctmagnus
08-19-2005, 04:07 PM
Actually, some of those screens would correspond to the dialing screen, Start menu, Contacts screen, etc. I've tried a few themes from Modaco that worked like that.

I've also checked out the xml (of at least one theme - not necessarily this one) and found nothing that references the other images in the download.

Mike Temporale
08-19-2005, 04:36 PM
Oh, THOSE extra screens. Sorry. You need to edit the registry to get those to work. I'll have to dig out the registry locations. Again, I need my laptop for that. :( It should arrive today. So I'll let you know later tonight.
