<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.teleflip.com/teleflip/index.jsp' target='_blank'>http://www.teleflip.com/teleflip/index.jsp</a><br /><br /></div>Here's an interesting web site. <a href="http://www.teleflip.com/teleflip/index.jsp">Teleflip</a> allows you to send SMS messages to a cell phone using their web site. The way it works is you send an e-mail in the format of &lt;mobile phone number>@teleflip.com. Teleflip then figures out which service provider that number uses and forwards the message. This service currently only works in North America.<br /><br />There is no charge for the service, which makes me wonder how they make their money. Maybe I'm just paranoid. Their privacy policy has the usual text about not sharing personal information. This looks like a really easy way to build a database of verified telephone numbers, though...

If you have access to email, then couldnt you just go to a web service like:
http://sms.mobile.yahoo.com/sms/sendsms.php?mcb=

Cool. I never knew Yahoo had that. I'd be more inclined to trust Yahoo with my data.

This is almost funny. I mean, it's useful, but anyone could make this. I made something exactly like this way back in January 2001. It way easy - just download the free database from NANPA, run a few half-intelligent searches, and viola! - instant carrier-independent SMS for 90% of U.S. cell phones.

I was all set to launch it commercially as phonesend.com - I had the domain, site, and service all working 100% - but I couldn't figure out the "commercial" part of it. In other words, I couldn't figure out how to make enough money to support the service itself. Since I was a student at the time, I couldn't afford to make that kind of donation to the world. So it hit the wastebasket and I started phonescoop.com instead. Oh well.. maybe capitalism isn't all it's cracked up to be after all...
