Yesterday I download my mail, headers only, from my POP server. I then downloaded the full text of one message. I then deleted all the messages and found that they had also been deleted from the server.

The manual says nothing about this, but it is normal for the phone to delete messages from the server?

That is normal behavior for a MS Smartphone.

if you delete the emails from your phone, then do a send/recv. again it will delete the mail from the server too. It's just doing what you told it to do.

smittyofdhs, most POP3 clients allow you to the option of deleting items locally but to still leave a copy on the server.

True, but that's not what we are talking about here. PPC & Smartphone doesn't have the option to leave copy on server after a delete at the local. This person deleted the email from the device and did a send/recv. which tells the server to delete the email from the account. As stated, it did exactly what he instructed it to do.

Yeah, the trick here is to not delete from the Smartphone - use it to read the email, and ONLY delete the message if you don't want it to download to your computer later. Remember that Microsoft lives in the magical world of Exchange....POP3/IMAP is a nearly forgotten concept to them, so many of the things that we have on the desktop world don't make it over to the mobile devices. :?

It's really dumb that the manual makes no mention of this. I think I'm entitled to assume that if I'm only downloading headers the body will not be deleted from the server unless I request it. It's no problem now that I know how to handle it, but that is still no excuse for poor documentation.

the manual also doesn't tell you that when you delete a calendar event on the phone that it will delete it from the exchange server, but it does. It just a fact of using these devices that maybe the manufactuer assumes you'll understand. That's what they mean by "sync".

I'm not 100% sure...but I think if you empty your deleted Items folder before syncing again....the emails do not get deleted.

Hi all, new Blackjack owner here. This is also my 1st Windows Mobile based phone. So far, I'm very happy with the device except for the way it handles emails.

I like to keep all my work related emails in the inbox organized into folders. I periodically archive them to free up server space. I have Copernic desktop search setup so that I can search through the inbox and archives to dig up any email I may need.

I DO NOT like the way the phone is forcing me to delete my emails off the server. I tried to get around this by creating a separate 'BlackJack Sync' folder in the mailbox at the same level as the Inbox, creating a server-side rule to copy any new message into this folder as well and setting activeSync to only synch with this folder. However, when I delete the email from the phone and synch with the PC, it still deletes the email from the Inbox as well! Evil or Very Mad This is really annoying to me. I understand that this is a WAD (Works As Designed) but damn! its poorly designed. Why hobble a mobile device with limited memory with the burden of keeping all the emails you're getting?

Does anyone have an idea of how I could get around this? TIA

p.s. I'm going to try out the 'empty deleted items folder before synching via USB' method. Too bad I cant setup WinMo 5 to 'permanently delete' the email.

Any chance you could use an IMAP mail server instead?

Unfortunately no. All I've got to work with is MS Exchange :(

Sorry I was confusing posts. IMAP wouldn't do you any good. It basically would behave the same as the exchange server.
