Some intrepid souls are porting the Shared Source CLI to Windows CE. The SSCLI is an implementation of the core infrastructure of the .NET Framework. Why is this useful if we already have the .NET Compact Framework for Windows CE? One reason is academic. Research could yield improvements to the framework. There is also a practical aspect. The .NET Compact Framework has a few gaps. This was intentional in order for it to fit on constrained devices. However, some Windows CE devices have RAM and processor specs rivaling a desktop PC. It would be useful to have the entire .NET Framework at the developers disposal. This would allow more powerful devices to have more complex applications built than would otherwise be written using only the Compact Framework. This could turn out to be a very useful project and bears observing by developers creating embedded .NET solutions.
