get to a contact quickly?

Anyone have a tip on how to access a contact quickly? When I type the first letter of a contact's name from the home screen, contacts opens with all the contacts containing that letter but if the letter is something like an "s" I just get the "p's" no matter how fast I type. Or a name starting with "L" I just get the "j's". I must be doing something wrong.

Voice name lookup works most of the time but still takes too long in my view.

After typing the first letter, type in the second and third.. the list will continue to narrow down. The speed you press the buttons with does not matter. '7' represents p, q, r, and s all at the same time.

what is cool here is you can use first or last name.
