One can only assume they know we're keen to the MPx200 v.2 coming out in a month of two. I, for one, won't be rushing out for one of these - even if it is free. I'll wait a tiny bit longer and get the dream phone with BT and WM03 instead.

It can't get any cheaper than this.
Well... they could pay me for buying one, then it would be even cheaper.

OK, trachy, I'm taking your word for it! I, too, would prefer that phone, but man, this is SOOO tempting.
But I got a lotta people at work who hate AT&T here, so... I'll wait patiently. Gotta have IMAP SSL.
(look at me convincing myself in a public forum)

Not free.

You need to purchase an expensive 24-month Wireless service from AT&T, and the phone is SIM-locked to AT&T, so you cannot use it with another carrier.

I woudn't call that "free"...

I've see this for $399 without a calling plan. Anyone seen it at a lower price without being enslaved to ATT? I currently use T-Mobile and am content with their service. Will this phone work properly on their network?

First off, the rumors I've heard about a next gen MPx200 are just that. I've only seen comments scattered about on various sites that suggest that an MPx220 is in the mix. Maybe we can get something more official from our fearless leader?

As for getting the MPx200 for cheap, you can get it through Amazon with a one-year contract for only $50. The Amazon rebates are for $120 with a minimum one-year agreement. If you want another $50 off from AT&T you need to subscribe for two years.

Amazon Price - $169.99
Amazon Rebate - ($120.00)
AT&T Rebate - ($50.00)

Do the math and you find that you're getting paid $.01 for 'buying' it!

IT'S NOT FREE - IT'S ACTUALLY MORE EXPENSIVE!!!!

In the end it costs you hundreds of dollars more than free, and this is highly deceptive on the part of Amazon, if their price is current and reflected on your bills. They're charging AT LEAST $10-$30 more per month for the same AT&T service plan than AT&T would charge if you bought the phone at one of their stores or online.

$10/month x 24 months = at least $240 worth of 'FREE' eh?

OR even worse, say if you chose the 'mLIFE local 1400 plan' at Amazon, you're paying $99.00/mo as opposed to choosing the same plan at the AT&T website (which is 1300 minutes plus 100 free minutes=1400 minutes) for $74.99/mo = $25 more per month if you bought from Amazon.

Over the life of a 2-year contract you'd be paying more than $600 extra in that scenerio!!

The best solution is to walk into an AT&T Wireless store and make them match the price on Amazon, which most of them will do. The only thing they won't do is extend your cost below any mail-in rebates they have, so for example if the bottom line price that day on Amazon is $75 for the phone, and AT&T stores have a $50 mail-in rebate, you'll have to pay $125 total at the store but you'll still get your mail in rebate so in the end you've matched Amazon's price and gotten the cheaper service plan saving you hundreds over the life of the contract.

DO NOT BUY FROM AMAZON if there is an AT&T Wireless store in your area. Do the math on that one.

Will they really price match Amazon?

Well, they did here in Los Angeles, not just once but twice at two different stores, which is why I know about them having to include the rebate amount in the price at point of purchase. In both instances they surfed to the website from their in-store computer and made a print-out of the Amazon page with the pricing, etc. that was then approved by the store manager.

However, these were the local stores and I'm not sure if this a nationwide/worldwide scenerio allowed by AT&T at every AT&T Wireless store. I imagine it would be. If they say 'no' just say you heard about it happening at stores in Los Angeles and then ask them how they expect to sell an MPx200 in store for $300 when Amazon is giving it away for free.

The answer is apparent now if my post was correct, but I'm pretty sure that the AT&T store employees have no idea that Amazon is charging more for the service plans or what arrangement AT&T corporate has with Amazon.

The only thing I can think of is that although they will seemingly match the price, you may have a harder time getting them to match a price of 'free' but who knows, give it a try, or wait until Amazon's price is back up to $49.95 or something. Most major metropolitan areas have more than one AT&T store so try more than one. Ask for the manager, tell him you're the buyer for your company and that you want to test out these new phones and AT&T's service, etc. etc.
