The wait for Smartphone availability in the United States is now over. Amazon.com is now selling the MPx200 along with AT&T Wireless service plans. After rebates, the price with a service plan is far better than I had been expecting: $149. Without a service plan, the price is still just $399. Considering that this is arguably the best Smartphone device yet, these deals are hard to turn down. Interestingly, Amazon is listing the device as having support for editing Word documents. Either there is a mistake in their information or Motorola is including 3rd party software with the MPx200. Regardless, the price is great and the availability is finally real.<br /><br />The Motorola MPx200 Smartphone does it all by combining all the functionality you need into a single, pocket-size package Windows Mobile software brings the familiar Windows experience to the palm of your hand You can synchronize everything with your desktop PC -- automatically -- with a USB connection, or over the air View and edit Microsoft Word attachments, take meeting minutes, record business notes, and draft letters Watch videos, news clips, and film trailers anywhere you go. Download music, games, video clips, and ring tones while you're on the move Unit Weight: 4.16 oz. Size (in inches): 1.88 x 3.5 x 1.06

Almost but not quite. The best place to activate an AT&T phone is at their wireless website. Extras include 100 minutes per month bonus and a $30 case. Problem is they will not activate the MPx200 because it is not yet in THEIR system. Also this phone is running last year's OS and it doesn't look like it can be upgraded (what's wrong with this picture? AT&T marketing is introducing a Smartphone 2002 two months away from 2004!). On the other hand the new Orange is supposed to come with Smartphone 2003 as well as a camera and Bluetooth. No one has signed on to distribute in the USA, but it appears that it may work on the AT&T network. Anyone have any other thoughts or info?

If AT&T Wireless' GSM network didn't reek then this might be worth looking into... Their coverage is not great and their data plans pale in comparison to T-Mobile's...

I really don't care for a Sim-locked phone.

Entropy1980, that is strange! I spent twenty minutes with AT&T wireless sales on chat yesterday and they kept saying it wasn't in the system. What phone number did you use? Also, isn't there a marked difference in OS 2002 and 2003 - especially in multimedia - and did I get it right on not being able to upgrade?

No 850 is ridiculous, all of the ATT towers in my area are 850, not to mention that their data plans are crap. As of just a few days ago when I spoke with them the largest plan available for purchase was 8MB for $19.99. Compare that with T-Mobile's unlimited data for the the same price. My contract with them is up in March, I more than likely will be switching if things don't change by then. :(

Anyone know how I can find out what band is common in my area? I don't have a GSM phone now, so I can't simply troll around. I assume CS knows, but we all know what we get for assuming. Is there a site out there that I can looks this up on? The AT&T site doesn't seem to have that info.

I just asked my ATT rep. After several months of poor reception with my t68 I was fed up and ready to cancel when my rep suggested I get a tri-band phone. When I asked why I was told because my area is mostly 850 towers. My T610 works much better.

I belive the guy I spoke with ended up having to go through the business side not consumer he put me on hold for probably 10 minutes, he said they were just put in the system yesterday (10.20/03) he did say they weren't apparent in the system, he had to dig to find it. I called 1-800-888-7600 hit 0 to skip through the menus...

Yes, I want to get one of these so bad but apparently I will have to wait for the first 850/1900 Smartphone to hit the market, whenever that may be. I am in the same boat, as there is better 850 coverage than 1900 around here.

Well I just ordered the MPx200 from Amazon!! :D I am one of the lucky ones that has 1900 service in my area, Clackamas OR, so I will let everyone know what I think when I get it.

I am curious as to why certain areas are at 850 and some at 1900? Will AT&T be changing everyone over to 1900 or will they just leave it a mixed bag across the US? It does kinda stink that I can not travel far with this phone such as when I go back home to Wichita, KS it will not work from what I can see.

I would like to know where I could find out info on what Smartphone 2003 has that 2002 does not. Or does anyone know??

Wonder how far 1900 extends across the Columbia.... I'm over in Vancouver, WA. Did you just ask a local AT&T rep to find out that the area has 1900?

I just went off of what the Amazon site said. It said that my zip code could handle that phone, I did not talk to anyone but I would be curious as to how far this coverage extends.

The Amazon site shows a map of the coverage area, did you put your zip code in to see what is says?

the t68 is a tri band phone, meaning it is a world phone. strange how they didnt tell you that. I sell cingular and that is strange to me. oh well.
there is more than one frequency of gsm in the U.S. -getting a phone with both gsm frequencies means more coverage throughout the united states. so when you buy a gsm phone get either a dual band 850/1900, or get a tri band, 850/900/1900, so it will work over seas, it may be 1800 instead of 900 for over seas just depends on the phone model.
sounds to me a lot of stories going on,mmm, I would like to have a gsm smart phone with bt, but i dont want a motorola.

I'm in SW Portland. and I'm going to head to the downtown ATT store today and see if I can pick the MPx200 up. CompUSA in Tigard had it in stock, but I can't risk buying a phone, having it not work, and then paying the 15% restock fee.

Spencer and Wilbert - if I get it today I'll post how well it works in our area.

Thanks brntcrsp. That 15% restock fee is a problem, but CompUSA seems to have a much better deal on it. You know sometimes I'm glad to have options, but then other times it drives me crazy trying to decide which way to go. :)
