In addition to those, I'd like to draw attention to two of my favorite application enhancements in Smartphone 2003.<br /><br />First, let's look at Internet Explorer. As was done in Pocket PC 2003, Internet Explorer was completely rewritten from the ground up to add support for HTML 4.01, XHTML, CSS, JScript® 5.5, and WML 2.0. On top of that, a new feature was added which lets the user choose how the page is adjusted to fit on the small screen (this was surprisingly left out of Pocket PC 2003).<br /><br />The new "Layout" menu (left) gives you 3 options: One Column, Default, and Desktop. Which one works best is different for each site you are looking at. Here we have Smartphone Thoughts in the Default layout (middle) and Desktop layout (right). Note the scroll bars in the Desktop layout.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/ie menu.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/ie default.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/ie desktop.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><br />This new option makes Internet Explorer a much more pleasurable experience and should put an end to the criticisms which claim that Opera does a better job on other phones.<br /><br />My other favorite enhancement to Smartphone 2003 is the support for multiple messaging accounts. SMS, ActiveSync and each of your POP3/IMAP email accounts are kept seperate and you switch between them from the new "Accounts/Folders" menu. When you hit the left softkey to compose a new message, Inbox first prompts you to choose which account you would like to send from. Additionally, Inbox now has support for signatures (text that is automatically added to the end of outgoing messages) which is configurable on a per-account basis (including SMS).<br /><br /><img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/menu.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/accounts.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/> <img src="http://www.smartphonethoughts.com/images/signatures.jpg" alt="User submitted image" title="User submitted image"/><br /><br />Something else you will notice in these images is that all menus have numbers next to each item. These numbers are automatically added by the operating system so existing apps should get that functionality without requiring any modification. In Smartphone 2002, you can use numbers to select menu items but most users are unaware of this because the numbers are not visible. This small cosmetic change will go a long way towards allowing users to quickly navigate through menus.

I was told by an Everlink rep that they will make upgrades available. Details of that are not yet clear, but we'll let you know as soon as something is announced.

Robert, are you saying then that there can be several (unlimited?) POP3/IMAP email accounts in Smartphone 2003? I have to check 4 email accounts several times a day and hopefully this will be easy for me to do.

It looks like the limit is 8 accounts. That gives you ActiveSync, SMS, and up to 6 email accounts.

It seems odd that they'd limit it to six email accounts, but that should be enough to satisfy 99% of the users out there. Way to go Microsoft! :way to go: Why wasn't this in the phone I'm holding right now though? :evil:

Did you notice if the IMAP mail had support for an SSL connection? That's what we use at my office, and they won't budge on that.

You know what the biggest improvement is in SP 2003.

The one that took the biggest customer survey/feedback to implement..and must have given the Developers a tough time to implement, coz they couldnt get it in the SP 2002.

The feature is...

'Date' on the Home Screen :-)

In WMobile 2003 Have they sorted out the Smartphone Pocket Outlook dropped features such as transferring the detail of a task as well as the title, and allowing ActiveSync to sync Notes/Memos as in PocketPC. Also can you now select text to delete e.g. when forwarding an SMS when u need to cut the headers out.

Just for the records, the WM 2003 Phone Edition has the same limitation of 6 accounts + ActiveSync + SMS...

I was just kidding about the whole Date thingy...glad that u took it in the right spirit :-)

BTW...Eagerly waiting for firmware build for my Red-E. WM2003 for Pocket PC had boosted the performance on the same hardware, hoping that SP2003 will do the same. After all its a re-write of the whole code with CE.NET 4.2.

And Have to admit...for me the improvements that u have in SP2003 - Bluetooth, More Mailboxes, and Best of all IE, and ofcourse the "Date" are really big improvements, and value to the SP platform.

Good thing u didnt change the UI drastically, this means the cell operators/support guys dont have to be retrained, which should make it easier for the adoption of the new phone.

And if we see performance boost, like we saw from Pkt PC 2002 to WM 2003..it will be awesome.

And Oh...the real beauty is under the skin...CF support and better Emulator (activesync/gaming) is what we developers have been waiting for!!

Smartphone does not have a file explorer built in. You'll have to create a shortcut to your exe and place it in the Start menu to be able to launch it.

Noticed that the 2003 got rid of the Settings->Phone->Change Band.

Its good to have Automatic Band Selection (I didnt like the need to switch manually everytime I am roaming) but giving the users an manual override is a good idea.

Actually, nothing's changed here. How band selection is up to the handset manufacturer, and they're responsible for including the control panel (hence its absence from the emulator builds).

I asked our hardware guys once about the whole auto-band selection thing, and was told that hardware folks are hesitant to do it for battery reasons. If you've got auto-band selection the radio has to contstantly scan for stuff on the third band, which uses up battery power. The reality is most users never need the tri-band support, and those that do need it rarely (except for a few oddball frequent fliers). Since that's the case, the control panel + battery savings is more compelling.

What I meant by unified memory was that I can store a file such a s a wav file for a ringtone on either removable or memory handset memory the phone would still find any file with *.wav extension and allow me to use this as a ringtone.

whilst on smartphone 2002 i had to place files in specific folders to allow applications to use them.

wouldn't this be a bad thing if you removed the SD card with your ringtones on it what sound does the phone play?
also isn't SD card access slower than the main memory access?

Yousaf, I understand what you mean now. Yes, some improvements have been made around this. You can store your ring tone on the storage card and we'll find it fine.

This is really making things difficult for me! :D I was dead set on getting a p800 but these new improvements are so tempting! I do not know as much about smartphones as I do about pocket pc's so I am going to ask a couple of dumb questions...first...will their be any 2003 smartphones that are touchscreens? I know that they have the pocket pc phones but I want something that looks like a phone like the p800. Second...I know there is nothing firm anywhere but when are the devices running this new os suppose to come out? Would it makes sense to buy a 2002 device and then get an upgrade or just to wait? Sorry for all the questions but I need to find out more information and these are the few pressing ones that I am trying to get answers to. :)

No i thought the smartphone was designed not to have a touch screen as it shouldn't need one

there are no 2002 devices out yet in the usa so this might be a bit of a moot question
