With dual inputs (3.5mm and RCA, the latter of which is easily converted to an addition 3.5mm input with a cable) and a USB charging port, the A5+ speakers are a great companion to an endless variety of devices: desktop computers, laptop computers, tablets, smartphones, and yes, even the humble Zune. I've heard really great things about these speakers, so they would do awesome in my office.

I'm currently running the built in speakers on my lappy and some Logitech something or other's on my desktop. I don't particularily like the sound that I'm getting so I more often than not push the sound (Air Play) to my Home Theater if I need good sound (Harman Kardon 3600 + Jamo speakers and a Martin Logan sub).

Since I'm the first entry, the chances of "randomness" probably isn't all that high... I should have waited.. haha

My Entry:

Current setup is my laptop speakers. LOL... I have no desktop audio setup and would love to finally have something I can use for both music and games! =)

My current solution also is using my laptop speakers, and the quality of music isn't very good. I'm a college student so I really can't afford speakers right now...winning these speakers would be awesome. I review music for my school newspaper, so having good quality speakers would undeniably help me out with my job.

At home I connect my laptop to my home stereo. Cerwin Vega speakers, Sony Receiver. At the office I use some cheap speakers that I plug into the headphone jack. I don't know if the Audioengine speakers will sound better than what I have at home, but there's no doubt it will improve things at the office.

I currently have a loner set of Logitech Z-1's.

When we moved to Ohio, I sold my then current setup of Kenwood amp and JBL speakers, with the intent of building my own. Haven't yet had the time to finish the project. In the mean while, my brother in law let me borrow the Z-1 that he wasn't going to use for the foreseeable future. I'm pretty sure he's ready to take them back anytime.

So there you have it, the A5's would improve my sound, since technically I wouldn't have any. ;)

These will be a big improvement from my blown out Boston Acoustics computer speakers!

Currently I use my macbook pro speakers or my headphones. When I'm down in my room I can plug my computer into my boombox but that still isn't optimal. I need some professional type speakers like these for my room when I'm producing mixes for songs I record with others or drum covers I do with a friend. Sound quality is key for me.

At home, I currently have a decent setup with some M-Audio AV-40's (LONG internal debate between these and the A2's, but I finally settled for the cheaper solution). I've got them hooked in through a NuForce Icon uDAC-2, which seems a pretty good combination to my aging ears. At work, well, the junk speakers in my monitor. Yeah, I REALLY need speakers in my office since I'm here so much, so I'd truck the AV-40's down here and enjoy the A5+ magic at home. And with the money I saved NOT having to buy new speakers, I'd be able to get a DAC for the office, too. :)

Hope life at HTC is treating you well! Really hoping to see a Titan on Verizon, so if you have a pipeline to the engineering and marketing departments, let them know!! :)

Currently I use a portable CD player with a 3.5mm input with my laptop when I teach my historical dance class. High quality speakers like these would help with improving both volume and sound quality, so my dancers can be more effectively cued by the music.

I'm currently using a set of Sennheises PC350 headphones and have no external audio at all for my rig.

This would be a significant upgrade, as now my ears wouldn't be muffed so I can check out the audio on my PC.

My current audio set up in my office is awful. I have a monitor with built in speakers...they are fine for the occasional video clip, but if I ever try to watch anything longer I have to rummage around for headphones.

These would not only be a huge improvement, they would also add some class to my desk.

Hi.

I have a new iMac and have been using the internal speakers, which aren't too bad. I used to have a set of Mackie MR8's and MR5's for studio work but sold them. The A5's would be a nice upgrade.

I have been reading your stuff since the very early pocket pc days and you have helped guide a lot of my early technical decisions and purchases. Thanks for all the effort you have put into these sites. I have been one of those who have benefited. Best wishes to you as you move ahead in your life.

At home, I have a Mac mini connected to a pair of of ten year old mighty Labtec speakers, $200 at the time, with separate woofer. They have seen about 15-20 different PC's and Macs over the years, yet they still work great.

A set of A5+ speakers might convince me to set up the Mac mini as a dedicated media system, as opposed to its current "general usage" role. Maybe slam in a 42 inch HDTV too.

My current audio setup is sad indeed. I am using my tiny guitar practice amp for a speaker. The amp has 2 rca jack aux inputs, that I have plugged into an adapter into my pc's headphone jack. The sound tends to be distorted and way to heavy on the base. I can't control the aux inputs volume directly, and it seems to be stuck at 10 (max).

Obviously these speakers would sound so much better (stereo not mono). I could more accurately control the volume and not wait until every one has left the house before turning the music on

I'm just using my HP TouchSmart desktop's supplied speakers, but I would sure love to give these to my grandson if I won them.

And by the way, I'm not here as often as I used to be in the early days of PPCT (all the time then :)), so just learned about your new job and plans to sell - wow!

Will be the end of an era and a huge part of my history - sorry to see you go but wishing you the best in your new capacity and life stage!

I usually just use headphones these days. They're handy and keep the sound limited to my ears only.

I used to have a very nice altec lansing pair but after about a decade of use, it died and i moved temporarily to headphones and just haven't had a chance to get a replacement yet... this would be perfect!

I currently use laptop speakers, even when playing games. The sound from them, while better than some, still are not so great. So, I would use the A5+ speakers with my laptop for some awesome gaming and music sessions.

I installed 2 in the ceiling speakers in our living room when we first bought our house, but the stereo is in the basement, so we never use those.
Then, the stereo in the basement has 2 big speakers, but, since it is in the basement, that our son has taken over, we don't use those either.
So, we listen to videos with the computer built in speakers, and once in a while, when the audio is too low, I have a small single wired speaker to plug in to the laptop.
That is about it :)

Man, are you like Psychic? I've been using some Dell 5.1 surrounds (4w/woofer) since they first offered them. They've been fine for a desktop, but they have suddenly shown signs of age, meaning, many times they don't make a peep when I need them. You would be The Man if you randomly picked me. And me, well I'd be an Old Rocker once again. Thanx for the op

We recently bought a townhouse in Arizona for a retirement home (prices are great right now). The downside is that we have to furnish it, with not only furniture but also the whole kitchen, electronics, storage, etc. So we have lots of decisions to make and money to spend!

In buying a new HDTV, I don't want to get into buying a receiver plus 5.1 theater system. I want good sound from a 2-speaker system or, at most, a 2.1 system sans receiver. The A5+ speakers are made-to-order for our needs -- compact, minimal connections, and highly regarded sound quality!

Thanks!

I would love, love, love to have these speakers for my home office. I've heard lots of great things about these speakers and as a DJ they would be a huge upgrade for me. I spend a lot of time at my desk, especially on Sundays, listening to new music. Most of my listening is through headphones but sometimes you want to take the headphones off and listen through a good pair of speakers. Right now my office speakers are a 2.1 setup that I think I paid $50 for 8-9 years ago. I'm almost ashamed to admit I have them. They work but I almost never use them because their sound quality is so poor.

My home setup continually get's passed over when there's a little extra money for upgrades. I've had a couple pieces of equipment wear out recently so my surplus funds had had to pay for those upgrades.

I really like the "studio monitor" look and design of the A5+. With an honest 50 Watt RMS Class AB amp, they should really pump out some quality and volume.

I currently have a set of Logitech Z3s. They aren't bad, but I hear a lot of good things about the AudioEngines and it would cool to upgrade and send the Z3's with my kid when she goes to college.

If I were to score these beauties, they'd be for my new Sandy Bridge build that is in progress!

Current setup: Logitech Squeezebox Radio. It's cool and all because it plays Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn Radio, and random radio streaming (e.g., KCRW). But the sound quality is lousy out of the mono speaker.

Future setup (fingers crossed): upgrade to the Audioengine A5+ speakers and pair them with an old iPhone with all the above apps installed. Huge upgrade. Oh, and I'd construct a sweet dock to tie it all together!

a Logitech X-530, which I don't like a lot. Sounds okay, but isn't really up to snuff for music listening. I'm sure the audioengine would sound much better -they have the rep of sounding like "real" speakers.

I'd hook these up to our bedroom tv as an upgrade to the built ins. The extra line in would be useful for hooking up an MP3 player or other device for music quickly and easily.

First, congrats on the HTC gig and good luck selling your sites. I've enjoyed reading them for quite some time now.

I work from home and am constantly listening to music on an old set of Logitech speakers. Listening to my music gets me through a day of development and nicely drowns out the noise the kids are making in the rest of the house. :)

A new set of speakers would make my day go past even faster and cover all the distractions, not to mention make my tunes sound even better.

Thanks.

Congrats Jason! Will definitely miss your articles and update information on tech industry which helped me along with so many people to learn about tech industry. I wish you good luck.

I am currently having Logitech S120 multimedia speakers and use for my computers. Its not very powerful speakers at all and i know i am missing a lot but didn't thought of spending much on speakers. But if win this then it would definitely improve my overall PC sound experience as i would be able to enjoy movies / music with quality sounds and it would be lot of fun to play games with this speakers.

Working from home just does not cut it with the laptop speakers. The stereo system is in another room and not easily accessible. I cannot turn it up if my wife is working from home as well. This does not mention the mother in law coming over to watch tv. Need the speakers to establish my space.

My current set up is a 2.1 Polk Audio system from my first PC I bought in 2000. I've heard the A5 (not the +) at a friends house and the depth and clarity of games and music is unreal, comparatively. Battlefield 3 Beta you could hear the pin on a grenade pulled and then bouncing on the ground. Almost scary at times.

The laptop speaker is what I'm using now, and that's better than the ancient altec lansing speakers that gave up the ghost a couple of months back...

These speakers would improve the sound quality almost infinitely.

I bet my ipod touch would also sound rather nice with these...

I listen to just about everything from my Android phone: Music on Spotify and Google Music, books on Audible, podcasts on Google Listen, and sports with TuneIn Radio.

In the house, I have a 20 year old JVC home theater receiver that's almost as big as a pair of concrete blocks and twice as heavy. It does nothing except provide an amplifier to a pair of Bose Acoustimass speakers (they're white, which is an indication of their age). In the garage, I have a pair of self-powered Altec Lansing speakers made for a desktop computer that I bought at a garage sale. OK for the garage, but not much volume. Both are connected through the audio out (headset) connector on the Android phone.

The Audioengine A5+ speakers would be terrific in my home because they'd save space by replacing both my old receiver/amp and speakers and the connecting wiring. I could just plug in the Audioengine A5+ where I want them and it would be an improvement from my very, very old woofer-less Bose speakers! I'd probably connect my Android with a simple bluetooth receiver output to the speakers via wire.

I'm currently using a JBL - Spyro - 2.1 Speaker System that I picked up on sale dirt cheap. They look very silly, but sound decent. The Audioengine A5 speakers would offer much better fidelity to torture my coworkers with Clockwork Angels next year.

Not to sound negative, but it's kind of weak that so many are registering just to post in this thread (also who's to say some of these users aren't creating multiple accounts just to improve their odds). I'm not complaining mind you... it's free after all. But perhaps this sort of contest should be open only to users who were registered before it began.

I also use terrible, cheap, computer speakers and could really use these as an upgrade to appreciate my music.

10-27-2011, 06:17 AM
I'm currently using a Logitech Z2300 2.1 setup for my desktop. I bumped up to the $150-ish price range this time, and I suppose it does sound somewhat better than the sub-$100 systems I've owned previously. And, hey, it's "THX Certified"! ;)

But, at the end of the day, the system still sounds exactly like what it is: Cheap, plastic computer speakers.

So, I'm looking to upgrade, and I just found the Audioengine products. They seem to fit into my usual enthusiast-level price and quality range. The reviews are stellar across the board, even considering the relatively high price for a desktop system. I like that, by most reports, I probably won't need a sub for this application. It looks like the logical next step for me.

Of course, winning a pair would be SO much better than buying them, so here I am.

Well i don't have great speakers solution for my laptop. I have a small unknown speakers which I got from my roommate. He gave it to me when he was going another state because of job transfer. I hardly use them and was planning to throw them . Anyway they don’t work. Audioengine A5+ will be a lot better than my current sound system as I currently use only laptop in-built speakers.
Good luck everyone.

Wow, these would be a great step up from my current setup. I have a pair of cheap Philips computer speakers right now. Frankly they are terrible and I should get rid of them ;)

They don't sound very well, and they are not shielded so whenever my mobile phone comes anywhere near my desk you can actually "hear" the phone communicating with the network.. So it would be a fantastic opportunity to send the old speakers on recycling :)

These speakers would be a major improvement over my current setup, which is a set of Cyber Audio desktop speakers. For $30, they actually sound pretty awesome. I use another set of them on my entertainment center as well.

Not only would these speakers drastically improve my current setup, they would free up a pair of speakers for use elsewhere.

I currently use an old set of logitechs that I bought 6-7 years ago. I use them as a pair of computer speakers but also run them through my tv. The years have not been kind to them as my 5.1 stereo system has become more like 2 and a half speakers and a sub that works when it wants to. Saying the a5s would be an upgrade is a huge understatement. I feel like I don't know what quality sound is :-(

The speakers I have are the speakers that came with the computer I bought in 2000 - HP. There are just the standard tiny little black speakers that give you the min sound. I have replaced my computer since then, but just the guts...no monitor or speakers. I'd love to actually have a decent system. I listen to all of my music either in the car or via my iPod.

I'm using a set of Labtec CS-800 speakers from 2001. How wouldn't these Audioengine speakers be better? They'd make Internet radio on my laptop sound MUCH better, for one thing. They'd also be able to make my Toshiba Thrive tablet sound better than the surprisingly anemic internal speakers.

I have Altec Lansing twin tweeter towers with a sub bass enclosure.

It would be most interesting to see if these are better.

Currently my Dad was kind enough to loan me his speakers, so this would enablle us both to have some sweet sound. I would give him back his speakers and keep these. :)

I have a Dell audio bar on my monitor. Not bad for something that hangs off a monitor, but there's no way it could compete with the cones on this Audioengine.

Wow, Jason, you are the gift that keeps on giving. This is so great of you to give up those incredibly sweet speakers. I currently have a little usb thingy that lights up when I push the top down. So, when I want music for the dining room, I plug into the laptop with this little thing and voila, perfectly tinny low volume music. Whoever wins these will definitely have a better experience.

Cool contest! My current setup is a pair of Logitech Z-10's (which I think I once saw on Jason's desk as well). They have been great for the last 4 years, but I was looking to replace them with something more powerful.

I'd definitely love the black pair if I win. :crossing fingers:

I currently have the tiny speakers that shipped with my Dell. Tese would be a tremendous upgrade.

My current speakers should sound pretty great, but the problem is, they are Creative DTT3500 5.1. Unfortunately, Creative dropped support and they don't work as functioned anymore with my sound card and I have recurring problems. I'd love to drop these in favor of the A5+!

Presently I use Microsoft Digital Sound System 80 speakers. These have been great, but are showing their age. I could use new speakers!

Thanks for entering everyone! I wish I had 89 sets of speakers to give away, because it sounds like many of you are suffering through some pretty terrible audio. :(

The winner is... ITforSmallBiz (http://forums.thoughtsmedia.com/members/itforsmallbiz/) (and it's his first post as well!)

Oh Wow! To replace my very old (extreme aging) mismatched set of Fisher + UBL speakers, of which 50% are blown (2 out of 4) would be the best thing I can think of happening to me since forever!

To upgrade these antiques to very super duper modern Audioengine A5+ speakers would be such a hugemongous upgrade: How hugemongous you say? This would be the biggest upgrade since I tossed my 6 year old Gateway Laptop for a Macbook Pro, since I swapped my gas guzzling 1995 Caddy for an amazingly high mpg Prius. It would be night vs day. I'm all tingly just thinking about the possibilities! :D

I am using a pair of Reveal speakers I got with my first IBM computer in 1992. I think it is time to upgrade, don't you. The Audioengine A5+ ones would be great.
