Group Icons in the Windows 7 Taskbar with Bins

The Windows 7 taskbar - sometimes called the "Superbar" - is light years better than what we had with Windows Vista. Ever used Vista on a high-res display and tried to target the tiny Quickbar icons? Painful! Windows 7 made that pain go away, but now it's easy to end up with a plethora of icons and no good way to organize them. Enter Bins: this app allows you to group icons together on the taskbar, creating groups in whatever way makes sense to you (putting all your browser shortcuts together for instance). There's a free public beta right now, after which the developer will presumably charge a few bucks for the utility.</p>

I've been doing that for some time (started in WinXP, I think) with the built in capabilities of Windows. It's called custom toolbars - Just create folders of shortcuts and name the folders for the shortcuts inside, i.e., Photography, WordPerfect Office, Mapping & Astronomy, etc. It works best if you move your taskbar to the left or right side of the screen, widen it, and turn on auto-hide. When you add the custom toolbar to the taskbar, you need to turn off "Show Text" and turn on "Show Title". I also have "Small Icons" selected under view.

You can indeed still do that on Windows 7, but I personally don't like how it looks/works. I don't think Microsoft invested any effort into this area with Windows 7 - it needs to be more visual like Bins is. :)

I don't know how visual Bins is, but this is visual enough for me . . .

I'm 100% happy leaving microscopic icons back in the Vista era - I like big, easy to see program icons. :) Glad it works for you though, it looks like a very customized setup.
