Once Lowe's starting using the system, Home Depot had to follow, even though they are using competing technology. Have you tried this yet, and, if so, what do you think? I'm curious what software people are using to read these barcodes? Any favorites?

Regarding their use in general - it is pretty smart marketing for several reasons.
1. It engages people - they have to take action so they are more invested.
2. It makes them curious as to what is 'hidden' in the code. I don't think companies are doing enough with this though - they should make it more like a contest or treasure hunt.
3. It get's them directly connected with data they can book mark or forward to friends etc.
