The lights are dim, the bouncer looks suspect, and Mike Tyson's tiger is situated there in the rear of the room. Even the Ethernet cables are grimy. Everyone's got their eyes on you and your new Alienware, and that stash of Razer peripherals just feels ripe for the taking."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/dht/auto/1295026340.usr20447.jpg" style="border: 0px solid #d2d2bb;" /></p><p>Do people really have LAN parties anymore? I have been to a few in my time, but game developers seem intent on making encouraging online play only. Anyone remember the big brouhaha over Modern Warfare 2 and its lack of dedicated servers or LAN play? Still, there are a few games out there that are more LAN friendly. Of course, lots of people use laptops these days, if sales figures are any indicator. Yeah, I think the bunker, while a neat idea, is probably a bit late to the game.</p>

I guess I don't have any geek cred - what the heck is a LAN party? Are they serious?

That's when everyone brings their gaming PCs together and game!
I still do that when I can; the proximity with friends makes for a great gaming atmosphere.

Wait a little bit......... with more and more cap on connections very soon people will begin to realize that this "all online frenziness" is nothing else than a trap to squeeze more money fron them. Yes I loved LAN parties: we played Janes F18 ahd DID F22 TAW.
No comparison with all these shooters based games.

I guess LAN parties are for us old folk. Way back in the day, before the Internet was so ubiquitous and fast, for a decent multi-player game, you had to have a LAN party.
What would happen is that you and a few buddies would set aside a Saturday and meet up at someone's house. After about 5 hours of setting up tables, cables, switches deciding on pizza and making sure that everyone could see everyone else on the network, someone would start up a server that everyone else would connect to to play the game-du-jour. Everyone in the same room (or rooms) usually led to a lot of smack talk, comraderie and general fun.
It was sort of like the computer version of guys getting together for a Dungeons and Dragons session.
I will maintain though that while online play is fun, it does not replicate the same thrill as beating down your buddy who is right opposite to you.

100% agreed - even co-op play is more fun.

Ok, ok. Old (me) and some less than old.

Yes! Co-op! But unfortunately, co-op games seem to be few and far between. :(
