<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.maclife.com/article/features/7_awesome_mac_app_store_alternatives' target='_blank'>http://www.maclife.com/article/feat...re_alternatives</a><br /><br /></div><p><em>"Since it was first announced during last October's Back to the Mac Event, consumers and developers alike have been alternately thrilled or worried over what Apple's online Mac App Store would mean for the future of OS X compatible software."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/at/auto/1294352989.usr105634.jpg" /></p><p>And today we now know what the Mac App Store is all about, but that doesn't mean you can't find other sources for your Mac software. MacUpdate and Bodega are a couple that I've used in the past, but there are several others listed here as well. What are your thoughts on these stores, have you given them a try? Or do you use one not mentioned here?&nbsp;</p>

I am incredibly fond of osx.iusethis.com. By telling me how many people are using a particular piece of software, I get a better idea of its quality. (well, more likely a better idea of value/features or some other similar ratio).

Still, I love the new App store. I'm expecting some extra money later in the year, and I'll probably go a little crazy, especially with Aperture being only $80 (I've been waiting to buy it, but didn't think I could swing $199 given that I have to update Curio and Scrivener and MacGourmet soon. Now I'll be able to).

I think the more choices the better. I rarely use MacUpdate, other than to set up alerts for software that might possibly show up at MacUpdate Promo later on.

Oh, another great place to find software: http://alternativeto.net

Say you want a todo app, but Things is a little bit more than you need. Go to alternativeto.net, type in Things and then go to the Things page. It'll have a list of apps that do similar things. You can then filter by platform (Windows, Linux, OS X and web-based) and by license (free, open source, commercial, etc, etc). Great place to find stuff.

Definitely a great suggestion, thanks Joe!

No problem. I actually keep a bookmark list of places to find software for Macs. When it get it to about 20 or 30, I'll publish a nice big list on my blog for everyone. :-)
