Starting with an 8-inch VAIO P mini-laptop in black or pink crocodile casing for $999, up to a 13.1-inch Glossy Premium Carbon VAIO Z at $4699 (and in limited production), there are several models in-between to fill the gaps. Sony is going the Vertu route this holiday season, adding some fashion to their products.

I do like the premium carbon VAIO Z model ( link ) shown above, configured out-of-the-box with a Core i7 processor, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, 13.1-inch backlit LED display at 192-x1080, backlit keyboard, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and NVIDIA 1GB VRAM Hybrid graphics card. At 3.04-pounds with standard battery installed (large capacity battery optional), expect 6-7 hours of usage, or 9-10.5 hours with the upgraded battery. Not much missing in this beauty, but, if you'd like additional upgrades to push past the magic $5K mark: VAIO Z Series Docking Station, $200; Large Capacity Battery $250.

Price aside, is this perhaps the perfect laptop?

Here's your new laptop Jason! You can officially forget the MacBook Air. With my old eyes, I'd be concerned about the 1920x1080 display on a 13.1-inch screen, but, what a powerful (and expansive/expensive) laptop!

Sony is often overpriced, but they generally accompany that by offering something that no-one else does, and they do it with style. I have three Sony laptops in my stable right now, purchased over the last 6-7 years. Don't think there is anything on the market today that matches up with my 4-5 year old Vaio TX laptop. Think about 4 years ago and find a 10.7" (width) x 0.83"- 1.12" (height) x 7.7" (depth), 2.76 lbs laptop. That's current netbook sizing and Sony squeezed a DVD writer and PC card slot in there, as well as WiFi, BT and cell radios, SD and MS slots, plus fingerprint reader. Even when you buy a travel charger, you get a compact unit with a case, that somebody obviously thought about traveling when they designed it*, as opposed to the usual brick with 12 feet of cable to deal with. You pay more for a Sony, but you pay more for a Lexus too. May or may not be worth it to any individual, but you do get more.

My "young" eyes can't handle 1920 x 1080 resolution on 13.1 inch panel - no normal human could.
It is a pretty killer laptop though!

Actually, I think it'll be fine. I can handle the Sony P (with the crazy 1600x768 screen) with a little strain (the terrible aspect ratio doesn't help), and that has a denser screen than this 13".

And I personally found the Sony P to be completely unusable, so I stand by my original thought. :) I saw a Z-series in a store with the 1600 x 900 resolution and it was *barely* tolerable. Any higher would not be. My eyes are not perfect though, so I'm probably different than you. :)

My new MacBook Pro has standard 1680x1050 resolution, and it's pushing the limit of my vision ... and that's on a 15-inch matte screen. Oddly enough, a non-glossy screen is easier for me to read, at the very same resolution, not sure why, at age 59, with 'lasik-enhanced' vision ...
