No more appropriate place for cynicism than here.

I suppose that if everyone is buying into the technology, it will have staying power. It all seems rather contrived, because without this industry push I really do not see 3D catching on. People are often very good at following suit on what the tech companies tell us we need, so time will tell if they can pull this one off.

3D is only getting into the homes of Joe Consumer via attrition...as in, when his current LCD/plasma TV breaks down and he goes shopping for a new one, it will probably end up being a 3D TV by default because all TVs will have that feature.

From what I can tell, 3D TVs still carry a bit of a premium over regular TVs, and the fact that you need glasses sure must not be helping. I also have to wonder whether 3D is doing well in movie theaters. I've heard that a few directors have recently decided against going the 3D route as they don't feel its appropriate for their movie.

I'm glad for that; here's hoping the 3D fad dies down.
