There's always the tried-and-true method of dumping your file(s) on a USB thumb drive, but if you don't have one handy (or you don't have a big enough drive), you've still got options...."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/dht/auto/1287078277.usr19541.jpg" style="border: 1px solid #d2d2bb;" /></p><p>The article touches upon setting up file sharing under MAC and Windows 7, and then discusses transferring via Wifi (including using an Ad Hoc wireless connection), FireWire, and Ethernet (for which you may or may not need either a cross-over cable or adapter. The latter is pictured above, lower center). Of course, there are other alternatives available, including a USB Transfer Cable (upper left above), or via a "LapLink" transfer cable (upper center), although you might have trouble finding serial or parallel ports on many modern computers. Was amused at the thought that the "tried-and-true method" of local file transfers has become via a USB drive, whereas the "sneakernet" that many of us remember involved floppies (and 5 1/4" floppies, at that!). USB has the advantage of being nearly ubiquitous: does that make it the best choice?&nbsp; What is your favorite method of transferring files from one system to another (especially if away from your home or business network)?</p><p><em></em></p>

Network on gigabat Ethernet.

Yep, that should work well.... :D

Intent of article was to look at a more casual situation - where you happen to have two computers in close proximity, but not in a wired network environment...

Will consider editing to make that point clearer! :o

I am finding myself in a situation to transfer files now.
My wife's laptop is on its last leg and need to get on another one. I purchased new one for myself and need to transfer my data (150GB) to my new laptop, then her data (approx 100GB) to my old one.

Currently I have an Adhoc network setup between my new and old computer to copy files. I process that appear will take multiple days to accomplish if nothing goes wrong.

I'm planning on buying some kind of usb cable that I can string between the two computers for, hopefully, a faster copy. I'm assuming I can pickup one at Best Buy on my way home from work today.

Pluck out the hard drive, and use a USB to SATA kit to copy files. Way faster.

Newegg.com - VANTEC CB-ISATAU2 SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002) as an example.

Thanks Lee,
I went out and got a Belkin Easy share USB cable. It was easy from there.
Windows Easy Transfer kicked in and I just transferred my data from one laptop to another.

It probably wouldn't be good for adhoc file sharing but for wholesale transfer it was pretty easy.

I came across several articles saying that a standard Ethernet cable would do the trick but I never got a chance to try.
