A co-worker has been eyeing my iPad over the last few months and said that his plan is to dump his Dell laptop and instead of buying another laptop he is going to buy an iPad. Perhaps two, one for him and one for his wife. With the updates in the new iOS coming out, it makes it even more appealing. I know there is a place for laptops but for those that are on the fence and don't need the power and options of a laptop, it seems the iPad is filling their needs. What are your thoughts?</p>

I have been trying to convince my mom (never used a computer in her life) to try out an iPad. I am not an apple fan myself but I see this as the perfect product for her. She could view pictures of the kids and email without the unnecessary power of a computer or laptop. She also wouldn't need to get internet and a router and all that jazz. She is not there yet and I think in order to get to that point I am going to have to buy it and let her try it out. We will see...I will try and let everyone know if it happens.

This is a bit misleading; notebook sales have been slowing since 2007. The iPad is just the latest in a string of gadgets that are stealing sales away. A lot of people are realizing that they don't need a computer to do what they want to do, where smartphones, set top boxes, and (yes) tablets are cheaper and do what they need.

The real story behind the numbers:

Though if an executive at Best Buy is saying that people are coming in more interested in tablets and ebook readers than laptops, that's not something to simply shrug off...

It might work until the month she discovers YouTube and burns through her "unlimited" data. :D I guess if someone isn't already paying for Internet access at home, the $30/month from AT&T isn't bad...
