After just a few months of use, however, this iPad skeptic realized that it's so much more -- it's one of those devices I've always needed. Those don't come around very often," Peter Svensson reports for The Associated Press."</em></p><p><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/at/auto/1284702161.usr17748.jpg" style="border: 0;" /></p><p><em>image credit: Apple</em></p><p>A lot of insights in the linked article, and a lot of emotional reactions from a technology journalist who originally thought that the iPad would be only good for games. As he spent more time with the iPad, he found more and more uses for it, including moving (scanning) all his paper documents to PDFs and onto the iPad. He likens it to "an iPod for paper." Here is his summary of his impressions:</p><p>"FIRST IMPRESSIONS: To an Associated Press technology writer, the iPad looked like a bigger version of the iPod touch, and there didn't seem to be much point to that. Also, it looked too heavy to hold in one hand, for comfortable reading."</p><p>"WHY FIRST IMPRESSIONS WERE WRONG: The size of the iPad doesn't just mean there's more of it, it makes it qualitatively different than an iPod touch. The device really takes the place of paper, as in books, printouts, newspapers and magazines. Also, the weight is easily managed."</p><p>"SECOND CHANCES: A slew of competing tablets will be on the market before the holidays. In terms of hardware, they may match or improve on the iPad. But the software -- primarily Google's Android phone software -- may not be ready for the job."</p>

I'm sort of in this camp as well - I was initially very sceptical about the iPad, but after using it a few times, I quite like it. However, I refuse to buy one until it comes with a camera.

I was on vacation recently and was thinking how cool and iPad would have been for entertainment purposes, but as someone who likes to take photos + videos on trips and edit/sort them, sadly, I'd still need to bring my laptop with me. So laptop + iPod Touch + Zune HD is what I packed this time around...

And as for waiting for a iPad camera... the iPad is a bit big for taking photos. Were you thinking for FaceTime?

I think I need to give you some sense of scope ;): I returned from my 12 day vacation with 31 GB of photos and videos. The photos were mostly in raw format, the videos 720p AVCHD. What I'd need would be:

1) The ability to connect a hard drive while simultaneously pulling the pictures + videos off my memory card (possibly not simultaneously if I had enough on-device storage) so I can empty off the memory cards and put the pictures + videos onto the hard drive

2) The ability to preview raw photos so I can cull the collection before taking them back to Lightroom to do full editing

Basically the iPad isn't quite enough of a computer for this particular set of needs I have.

And the camera, yeah, front-facing for Facetime, Skype, etc.
