When I looked up this message, it said this happens when the book is installed on a storage card. I installed to main memory and got the same thing. Anybody know a way around this? I've been at this for four years and it's wearing me out.
MS Reader's DRM is so intrusive and convoluted I gave up on it years ago. I know you have already paid for it, but http://www.ereader.com/ebooks/b16734/?si=59 has it and in 10 years, I have never had an activation problem with their books that a quick email to their support staff didn't have a ready answer for. - well, there was one time, but it turned out to be a corrupt sector on a memory card - difficult to diagnose.

It can also happen if you reinstalled the reader but didn't uninstall and reinstall your activation. I recommend trying the following steps:

1. If you haven't soft reset your Reader since installation do so now
2. Uninstall your activation from either your Activesync/device manager or from "Remove Programs" under settings on your device.

3. Go to http://das.microsoft.com/activate/en-us/default.asp?& to activate
4. Soft reset your device

If that doesn't resolve your issue please call (866) 834-8317 or go to http://www.microsoft.com/reader/info/ for additional support.

Sincerely,
Christine - Microsoft Reader Team

Wink I am still using it too.

Only real problem I have had with it is the activation process.
Seems a right pain it the butt.
Been using the reader sense I got my Axim, Then on to my Asus, and now on my gateway netbook.
Got well over a hundred books in my libaray. Mostly from BAEN free libaray.
Great place that.

Hope they continue this little app as its been a great little app for me.

1 suggestion to Ms, get rid of the activation process.

I don't have any DRM .lit files, so I'm okay there. I think the only problem I had with Reader when I was using it was the inability to read anything in Landscape mode. I got spoiled with uBook to the point I hated reading in Portrait mode.

Landscape works perfectly on my HP 4700hx. Perhaps it was your pocket pc not MS Reader?

It's simple, it remembers where I am, even if the device crashes, and it works fine for me.

The key, and this is the key for all things digital, is that I have nothing to lose from DRM because I have never bought a DRM'd LIT book (nor have I ever bought DRM'd music). Listen, it's really this simple. If you buy something with DRM, plan to lose it eventually, and don't whine about it when it happens. No matter who the company is, no matter how big they are or how liberal their policies, if the file requires someone else's server to use it, then you will eventually lose it.

eReader's is the only DRM system I've seen where you don't eventually lose the book, but it's still a pain to keep track of what credit card I used 6 years ago to buy that particular book. So I buy my ebooks from Baen and others who offer DRM-free books and I ripped my own CDs until Amazon and others started offering MP3s. (Missed practically an entire generation of new music, but the issue was too important to compromise on.) Now I buy quite a bit of music from Amazon and I continue to enjoy my DRM-free LIT books.

Since I'm one of the few people left in the world who still use it, I'm quite pleased that they've updated Reader. I really hope they do bring it back in the Zune and create a new market for the format.
I too am one of the few people who use it. Just bought Asimov's SFF and Analog SF magazines, and tried both MS Reader and Mobipocket versions. I still prefer MS, which is a surprise as it is so old. The one thing I liked that mobipocket had that reader does not is the ability to tap on one side of teh screen to turn the page. Reader needs a careful tap on the bottom icon.

If you have baen's books then you do not need to activate. I have had reader since I bought my pda and have never activated it. I've got getting on for a hundred books, some bought, some free. No DRM (it's the curse of hte devil).

All the rest are non-drm. I makes sure to look for those types only now.
