Don't know about the speed (don't feel that big a difference between my HD2 and an iPad 2), but you can set user agent in the Android browser, which means you can force the desktop version easily. And both browsers render pages fine. For me the advantage for the default Android browser is reflowing text to fit. That's pretty awesome. One reason why I haven't downloaded Opera Mobile for Android; it's not really needed.
