Over the top

I think the UI is a bit over the top. But it's good to know what's possible on the platform! Overall, I think it bodes well for WP7.

Also, consider how much time HTC invested into this. For all...

In fact, I have. I run the emulator and tinker with the SDK all the time. I'm not saying the home screen can't be customized. I'm saying its personalization options are limited to colors only. For...

Honestly, multitasking is just not that useful. I lived without it on my iPhone for years without any complaints. And now that I have it with iOS4, I've only used it once, just as a test. I'm sure...

Missing a point?

I think there is a lot Microsoft can leverage to support tablets using a variant of WP7. Windows Phone 7 appears to be largely built on .NET and Silverlight, which is really an offshoot of WPF. With...

The bigger picture

Here's the thing, though. Microsoft has based this whole thing on .NET underpinnings, and this is potentially a Really Good Thing. Slow out of the gate, it's vitally important they get the base OS,...

This does change the game a bit

When I worked for Microsoft, what struck me is how dedicated most people I worked with were. My friend, who ran QA, always wanted to collaborate with me on a DirectX game in our spare time. Others...

Post My WP7 prediction

First off, I think Microsoft gets solid A- for their effort here. I laud them for making sensible design decisions, and having the balls to jettison the trainwreck that WinMo 6.x was. They lose...

It's basically an internal war

It's basically an internal war between the people who get it and the blathering idiots. It's unfortunate that it's usually the blathering idiots who seem the most persuasive.

I'd imagine the...

Resolution is not a huge deal

At some point, higher resolution gives diminishing returns in terms of overall usability. There is a reason why so many people keep buying 320x480 iPhones instead of higher resolution Android...

WP7 isn't going to cut it

WP7 isn't going to cut it and Microsoft knows it. The important objectives for Microsoft are, however:

1. Establish a new brand
2. Discard the stodgy old image of Windows Mobile
3. Create a new,...

I think WP7 has the good, but

but I think now it's all about the hardware. I hope HTC, Samsung, and LG give WP7 their A game.

It's the apps, and MS ain't getting them

WinMo developers are still jumping ship to iPhone and Android in droves. I see this happening for 2 reasons:

- Developing an app that runs on most WinMo devices is Hell. Supporting how many...

Too little, too late, too slow

These changes are skin deep. Layering a shell on top of a bloated, slow OS is no way to do mobile. The videos I saw showed choppy animation and sluggish browsing.

This should have been WinMo 6,...

Microsoft has been in denial for 2 years

Microsoft just hasn't followed Andy Grove's time-tested motto: only the paranoid survive. I think Microsoft took a look at iPhone and thought it could half-ass its way with WinMo for half a decade....

How ironic that the very company who argues that the browser is part of the OS is the company that lacks a decent built-in browser on its mobile platform, and has to rely on third parties to improve...

2009 is out for WinMo

I very much doubt Microsoft will even release WinMo7 in 2009. The most that will happen is that they will provide some information and a few more screenshots will leak. But here's a summary of why I...

My question for Microsoft, as a developer

My main question to Microsoft as a developer is: What have you done for me lately?

To be fair, on the desktop side, things are looking pretty spiffy. .NET is a solid platform, and writing Windows...

Nice web site update - now where's the new stuff??

I wish they'd spend a little more time shipping WM7 and providing developers more info on that instead of wasting time with more graphics on their web site.

I was as diehard a WM dev as they came,...

I have another theory

Rather than Microsoft delaying because they are reengineering from the ground up, I think it's quite the opposite. I think they are probably gunning for complete backwards compatibility, and need the...

We'd have to actually see Nova before making a judgement

We'd have to actually see Nova before making a judgement. If Palm can create something that can compete favorably with iPhone OSX and Android then it might be worth pursuing. If they can provide a...
