Default Nokia's New Clam-Shell Phones

http://press.nokia.com/PR/200406/948888_5.html

Fresh off the news of falling market share due to the lack of clam-shell phones, Nokia has announced 3 clam-shell phones. (Here are the press releases for each individual phone: 6170, 6260, 2600)

User submitted image

The 6260 (pictured above) has Bluetooth, VGA camera, Push-to-Talk, Email, Tri-Band, Series 60, and a "Innovative Fold Design". This sounds very much like what we are expecting from Motorola on the MPx220. Oh, and it also is available in Silver or Black. From what I can see, the MPx220 can match or exceed each of these features.

8O 8O These phones look awesome!

The last time a phone caught my eye like this, it was the 7650.

The design looks innovative, even down to the fresh location for the camera which is enhanced by the swivelling screen (swivelling screens are hardly new these days since they've been around for ages, but to see Nokia coming out with one has to mean that swivelling screens have come of age).

I particularly love the look of the phone working with the full size keyboard (I'm guessing it's IR). The design of the unit makes it perfect for stable use on a surface like a desk...... and ideal for watching videos too! That's cool!

With the new Communicator and now this one, I think that Symbian and Nokia are really going great-guns and keeping good distance between them and the competition.

Remember, Nokia's market share slump is in the middle ground - it's Smartphones are still outselling and growing.

All of a sudden, my MPx200 looks a bit dull. But hey, they're only phones so I think I'll shut up now!

ops:

LOL! Nokia finally gets it after how many years now? Clue to Nokia: Customers are the ones who get to decide what kind of phone they want, flip or candybar. The mfr is no one to decide and force only one kind of design down the customers throat. Looks like finally someone wokeup in Nokia's management and decided to take on stubborn designers in Nokia not wanting to design flip phones.

Samsung sure laughed all the way to the bank with this obvious misstep by Nokia.

I belive the Series 60 OS supports MP4 video capturing. Does Smartphone capture video?

Very good looking, one must admit. I don't know how to feel about the softkeys and joypad being on the screen-side of the hinge though. Wouldn't you need to hold the phone by the hinge to use them?

That may be true, but from what I am hearing from Windows Smartphone users, the OS is not ready for prime time. It will require at least one more release and maybe more before it functions acceptably. If Nokia can release these phones in a decent timeframe and at a reasonable price with the Symbian OS, they will likely be further ahead.

One concern that I have is the apparent size of the Nokia clamshell. maybe it's an optical illusion, but it looks larger than the already large Mpx220! Ack! 8O

Cheers all!

For some, that is correct. However, the MPx220 is expected to run Windows Mobile for Smartphone 2003 Second Edition. Which is the third release.

I doubt these phones are going to help their sales much.
