Default Nokia Licenses Microsoft's OTA Exchange ActiveSync

http://www.dmeurope.com/default.asp?ArticleID=6043

"Finnish mobile handset maker Nokia's Enterprise Solutions business group has licensed US software company Microsoft’s Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol to enable wireless and direct synchronisation between Microsoft Exchange Server, part of the Windows Server System and future Nokia enterprise mobile devices. The collaboration between the two companies is to allow Nokia to build a direct over-the-air synchronisation link between Nokia enterprise mobile devices running on Nokia's Series 60 and Series 80 software platforms and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 for e-mail and other personal information management (PIM) data, such as calendar information and contacts. By integrating the Exchange Server ActiveSync protocol into Nokia devices, enterprise customers are provided with a wireless e-mail solution."

Now this may not be as much of as surprise as the Media Player news, but it's still big news. This move allows Nokia to offer a better enterprise solution out-of-the-box. On the flip side, this news also puts some pressure on RIM. Their BlackBerry may be the main solution for always on email, but this partnership is a direct move to change that. RIM better take a good look at their server and licensing costs if they are going to compete.

I agree Mike, this news is bound to put pressure on RIM.

And since the much awaited BlackBerry Connect software is not yet available, possibly because of the lawsuit, RIM will find it harder to break into newer markets. RIM still has a year or two, before Exchange truely gains strength.

I read an article this afternoon about RIM's future. It was indicating that RIM might be a nice ackqasition for someone like Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, or the like.

Personally, I don't think it's going to happen. To many companies seem to be worried about the lawsuit, and as a direct result, they are signing on with Microsoft for the Exchange solution. Microsoft can now say that Palm, Nokia, Windows Mobile devices will all work with Exchange OTA email solution.

Yes that is true Mike. But RIM devices look so silly and primitive and ancient and silly (did I mention silly?) and coarse and rough around the edges and well lets face it....boring. They should be banned and all existing units destroyed.
