Default Mobile RSS News Reader: FreeNews

http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2005/04/19/mobile_rss_news_reader_freenews.htm

"Imagine how convenient it would be to quickly scan your latest news feeds, topic radars and other RSS content while waiting in line at a store or during your daily commute. Now this has become reality with FreeNews, a mobile news reader recently launched for public preview. FreeNews is a Java-based application that runs right off your cell phone. According to the FreeNews product information page most current cell phone models from the major brands (Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, LG etc) and wireless devices like the PalmOne Treo, BlackBerry and devices running the Windows Mobile operating system are capable of running FreeNews."

I haven't tested this myself. In theory it should work on Smartphones with the Java client but on the developers website it says "except Verizon". Must be a problem with the "worry free guarantee" or something. Anyone willing to try it out (except Verizon), and report back? There is a trial version available here.

Default Re: Mobile RSS News Reader: FreeNews

I don't want to spoil your fun but this application is written in Java and is not specific to Windows Mobile.

Nowadays many phones with Windows Mobile have also Java on board, so they claims are simply a scam. It is Java app, not MS Smarpthone app.

... and from experience I know that Java embedded in Windows Mobile is quite incompatible so I doubt this app would run in many Windows Mobile phones, like Orange SPV C500 or Audiovox STM 5600...

I didn't think it would work either but their site claims it "should" work. This is why we posted it as a "try snd see if it works" kinda thing.

I would sign up to test it, but I don't like the idea of giving my cell number to a company that I know nothing about. :? In fact, I think the sign-up form is a little too in-depth for a free trial.

Yeah I noticed that too. A bit over the top.

I just don't like the usability of Java based apps. They look different. Different keypad behaviour. And the worst part, you do not see a Start menu icon for the app. You have to launch the Java shell and then run the app. :-(

Seems kind of primative doesn't it? Like Windows 3.1
