Default HTC Vox 1 Day One

http://community.softteq.com/blogs/nick/archive/2007/05/07/htc-vox-1-day-on.aspx

"After spending a day with my brand new Vox I thought that I'd share some of my thoughts regarding this device. In the past I have always been a Pocket PC/PDA kinda guy but when I saw the HTC S710 (aka the HTC Vox) I decided to splurge on a Smartphone device. Of course these names are now defunct and what I have is actually a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device. Although I have only just started on my journey into Smartphone land I still think that I'm going to need a lot of convincing that it is the way to go. However, if you are already a Smartphone user then the Vox maybe your perfect device! Anyhow enough talking, lets get into some images...."

For those of you interested in the HTC S710 also known as the Vox, Nick's .Net has many pics to share as he unboxes and uses his S710. The size and form factor of this device look awesome. Some of the pics include screenshots using Skype (his personal favorite), and the Deepfish browser. When are we getting this device here in the US?

Excellent write-ups. I want this phone badly, but can't bring myself to buy one without being able to hold it in my hand first and make sure it is what I expect

I closed my eyes and took the plunged. It's hard to describe this device until you see it and hold it in your hands. I really like it and the included "Wi-Fi" is a nice touch. This is my favorite so far out of the all Smartphones that I have owned previously (see below).

Audiovox SMT5600
Cingular 2125
Qtek 8500 (aka Cingular 3125)
Samsung BlackJack
Palm 750
BlackBerry Pearl

Been doing that before... but now, I learned my lessons :-) No more early adopter mentality for me (aka guinea pig)

But please, do send us more feedback/review since I am interested in this phone also. Not just the upside, but the downside of using the phone. Thanks!

I am a HTC S620 user.

I bought the S710 because I thought I would like the slideaway keyboard with the bigger buttons.

I have decided after a few days of using the S710 I prefer the S620.

Here is why.....

#1 In my hand the S710 top moves ever so slightly (probably less than 1 mm at the most). It just feels like it is opening up a little bit and I find this a bit unsettling. I am worried about 12 months from now and if the spring will still be as tight on keeping the bottom and top aligned.

#2 I am probably just used to the D Pad on the 620 but I do not like the 710's D pad sitting on the left of the screen when the keyboard is open. It works fine but I prefer the 620 placement.

#3 The pop out keyboard requires getting used to...The number keys on the keyboard are the same colour as other keys and the four function buttons (Green/Dial, Red/Cancel, Home, Back) remain the same physical button but the softkeys have two new keys under the labels on the screen. Feels funny reaching up to use back and cancel. Ditto when you want to Tab to the next field.

I think that most of my hesitations are that I am used to the S620. I love the single handed use. I love the JOGR and the double click options. What I really miss on the 620 that the 710 has is the one touch record button. Products like tne Microsft Voice command needs this type of button but the 620 lacks it. This could easily be solved if the JOGR button open email was programmable / assignable to a program.

Other observations on the S710

- Great rubberised feel
- Feels nice and solid in your hand
- Screen is bloody amazing in quality and resolution
- 2 Mega pixel camera takes great shots
- Much faster that the 620
- SIM and memory card slot are accessible without taking out the battery

Did not really spend a lot of time playing with Mobile 6. Seems pretty similar on the surface.

Hope this is helpful to some.

Default It IS available in the US now...

Dave over at: http://www.dweiniger.com/ has them in stock for what I believe is a reasonable price unlocked (but also unsubsidized if that is what you are looking for).

If you haven't done business with him before, you are in for a treat. Fast order processing and fabulous customer service. I've bought probably 8-10 phones from him (including the two S710's I just ordered tonight).

I have this phone now for four days. This is my first time having a smartphone. I always been a pocketpc user. I have to say that I have to get a little used to the no touch screen. But with the slide out keyboard it's compesates very well.
