Default Mobius 2007 Amsterdam: What's Coming Next for Windows Mobile

Mobius day one is still underway, but I wanted to share this with everyone right away: we saw the next version of Windows Mobile earlier today, and here's what I can tell you about it: it's an update and not an upgrade (it's not Windows Mobile 7). The update will be provided to device manufacturers in Q1 2008. I saw it running on current hardware (something released within the past 18 months), and it was snappy. As part of the "handshake NDA" at Mobius, none of us are permitted to write about the details of what we were shown, only our impressions of what we saw. My impression was extremely positive – not jaw-dropping, "How did they do that?" positive, but a lot of head-nodding and "Finally!" positive. I definitely wanted to have the update on my phone, that's for sure – I saw a great increase in functionality that will make any Windows Mobile user happy.

Sounds like more of the same ole-same ole to me with maybe fixing a few things. IMO windows mobile needs a complete GUI face lift if they want to keep pace with the IPhone. Sure the IPhone is missing some features (mostly business) that WM has, but for how long?

No Photon anytime soon I take it? Grrr, this is just like the flying car, everyone talks about it but no one delivers!

It doesn't necessarily mean Photon is delayed. And from people are saying, WM6 -> 7 seems like a bigger update than WM5 -> 6. Jason, could please confirm this (as it's an "impression")?

I'll happily accept an update instead of getting nothing for the coming months. Bring it on!

I agree, an update is better than nothing except for being able to view Office 2007 files.

Mobius is happening now and CES is on the close horizon so maybe we'll have the juicy details sooner rather than later.

Did you happen to see the WM6 update for my Blackjack anywhere around there?

But here's the question: the Windows Mobile standard smartphone doesn't have a touch screen, so should Microsoft even ATTEMPT to do what Apple has done? I don't think they should - it's a completely different device with very different user input methods. The touchscreen Windows Mobile Professional smartphones on the other hand...yeah, they're in dire need of a UI that's finger-based and not stylus-based.

Nope, I checked under a few rocks but didn't see it. Sorry.

I don't think you're ever going to see it now that the BlackJack II is out. The push is on for you to go the upgrade hardware route.

But that's just my opinion.

I'm with you Jason. No need for an iPhone clone on WinMo professional devices, they could do a Shadow or some other UI upgrade that would make more sense from a Windows Mobile stand point.

Plus, I can just hear the Apple fanboys crying now if it looked anything like an iPhone UI. We catch enough flak already.
