Default HTC and T-Mobile's "Dine and Dash" Event, Featuring the T-Mobile Dash

This morning, T-Mobile officially announced the Dash, their version of the HTC Excalibur Smartphone, at a "Dine and Dash" PR event in SoHo. I had the opportunity to be at the press event, and so am assuming Guest Editorship at Smartphone Thoughts to have you join me inside for a brief look!

Figure 1: Entrance to the Mercer Kitchen.

The event was held at the Mercer Kitchen, a trendy restaurant on Prince Street in SoHo. They had rented out half of the lower floor for the 60 or so journalists and reporters that showed up for a breakfast at 8:30am. (I've gotta admit, this is the earliest PR I've ever been to...)

Figure 2: The event was downstairs; a nice banner was placed in the stairwell.

I had the opportunity to talk to several folks from HTC, T-Mobile, Microsoft, and Waggener Edstrom, the PR agency who represents all three, about the Dash -- it's very clear that they're excited about this device, and even more so, they're interested in targeting the consumer space with it. This is a huge departure from most RIM and earlier Windows Mobile devices, and the $199 price point (with 2 year contract) reinforces that idea. The device will be in stores on October 25th.

Figure 4: Behind my table, there were these crabgrass installations. The T-Mobile and HTC folks decided to spruce it up. Those "cell phones", by the way, are actually boxes of mints.

I ordered pancakes for breakfast and proceeded to sit down for the beginning of the PR event. T-Mobile's and HTC's PR heads spoke for a few minutes each, and stressed the importance of this partnership and the significance of the T-Mobile Dash. HTC, whose PR head is, as he put it, an "Australian in New York representing a Taiwanese company", is clearly making a big branding effort. I'm very happy to see this, and along with the HTC/Cingular "Smart Meets Sexy" event in New York just a short while ago, highlights their commitment.

(By the way, I'd have taken a picture of both of the gentlemen, but they were right behind my chair, and I didn't want to blind them while they were speaking.)

Figure 6: Everyone enjoying breakfast. Folks from all types of media, including mainstream magazines, were there.

It was clear that this event, like the Cingular one a few weeks ago, is clearly intended for the mainstream media. There were reporters and columnists from major magazines sitting right next to me at the table. There also seemed to be agreement that the T-Mobile Dash's form factor has potential to gain mass market acceptance.

Even better, I now have an T-Mobile Dash unit. The last two pics are teasers from a review I'm frantically writing up and will probably post tomorrow. Immediate impressions: the unit is incredibly slim and extremely comfortable to hold in your hand. It feels a lot like the iPAQ 19xx and 41xx Pocket PCs, but possibly a bit narrower, and with a rubbery grip on the back. Pictures don't do the styling justice -- I think it looks quite professional in the hand. The screen is incredibly sharp and with excellent contrast, and the keys are tactile and reasonably-sized given the slim form factor. Overall, I think this will be a winner for T-Mobile. I've got lots more details coming tomorrow -- stay tuned!

I look forward to reading your insightful review, Janak. Though I'm not sure I myself could "step down" to a Windows Mobile Smartphone coming from a more PDA-centric Treo, I am drawn to this little device for some reason. I'll probably upgrade to a Treo 750c (Cingular) when that comes out, God only knows when.

Great pics by the way.

Default NO 3G unfortunately

I'm also drawn to this handset but the lack of 3G data is the deal killer. After having a chance to play with phones on Sprint's EV-DO network, I don't think I could step down to EDGE. I'll just have to wait until Cingular comes out with a 3G smartphone or the HTC TyTN (Cingular 8525). Then I can finally upgrade from my SMT-5600!

Sounds like a pretty sweet event. I'm not so concerned about 3G. I would rather have a good quad band QWERTY device in my hands now and worry about upgrading when 3G hits my area. 8)

Although I'm sure it's as bad as you say, I'd still be willing to take it off your hands for $50 or so.

The Dash definitely looks like T-Mobile's answer to the Motorola Q. I wonder, though, how much battery life these slim units are sacrificing for the sake of form factor, and whether they wouldn't be better off taking a little extra size and not needing an extended battery later.

While I can't say for sure, since I don't have one... Everyone that I talked with seems to indicate that the Excalibur has a battery life typical to that of the Typhoon series. Which would be far better than the Q or the i320.

I'll tell you what -- it is a very cute little device, and I have the same feeling about it. If T-Mobile wasn't so suspect coveragewise around my house, I'd consider switching. I've owned a Smartphone before and it's a pretty decent experience.

I saw the 750v at (another!) PR event today. That is really one nice device. Nothing mind-blowing, but it's a bit more contoured than the 700w, nice rubberized grip on the back, and of course no antenna. The styling (blue case on the back) looks fantastic. Overall, a really nice device.

Thanks. I had to take several of them multiple times, because my increasingly lame SD550 has no Image Stabilization. I need Jason to get me an SD800IS.

Well, it ultimately depends on what you need. T-Mobile is clearly positioning this for mass market. That ties into the aggressive device pricing and aggressive data pricing ($29 for unlimited GPRS/EDGE/WiFi). I agree with your point, but I'm sure there'll be folks for which this is an attractive solution.

Gah, I pressed the HTC folks there a little about the 8525 today. They would say nothing, absolutely nothing. I'm hoping it's soon, as per the rumors I've heard.

Or is it the inner gadgeteer that says "need something new"?

On that note - the Dash is not immune to fingerprints, especially the screen. The screen is incredibly slick and reflective. I'd consider screen protector-ing it. The rubbery back do slightly show fingerprints, although it's not significant.
