Default How to Reboot Your Zune

A quick and simple tip for you Zune owners: if your Zune is acting up, such as locking up when playing a video file or something similar (thankfully this is very rare on the Zune), rebooting the unit might help. To reboot your Zune, all you have to do is press and hold the Back button (the left-most button, the one with the arrow pointing left) while pressing upward on the control pad. It doesn't have to be a simultaneous press: you can first press the Back button then while holding that button, press and hold the control pad upward. You'll see the Zune raise the volume (or whatever pressing up will do in the mode that the Zune is in) then after a few seconds, it will reboot itself. The reboot process takes around 15 to 20 seconds.

Default Reboot or Wipe?

I did this when setting up the Zune under Vista RC2. All the preloaded content vanished. Don't know if it was the "reboot" or some Zune-hacking-Vista wierdness. Not cool that they don't support Vista right now.

The reset does not erase anything.

Default Zune's 3 Power Modes: Sleep, Standby, and On Explained

[Note: I posted this a few weeks ago but to the wrong topic section. It covers reset and shutdown.]

Zune has three power modes: Sleep, Standby, and On. The following fully explains each and how to exit and enter each mode.

When it arrives it will be in SLEEP mode:
By pressing the play button it goes ON. When Zune wakes from SLEEP mode you will see the Zune Logo and a progress line below it that advances to the right as it boots up. Microsoft says it will go from SLEEP mode to ON in less than 15 seconds. It appears to take half that time. Microsoft uses the term SLEEP mode which means fully powered OFF. Moving the slide switch from Lock to Unlock, connecting, or docking puts Zune into ON mode. Plugging in earphones only turns it ON if in STANDBY mode.

To enter SLEEP mode either:
  • Do not touch Zune for 24 hours and it will automatically enter SLEEP mode (Microsoft recommends this method); OR
  • Hold Back button while holding Down button for 3 seconds. (Which works regardless of the lock switch position interestingly enough).
This REALLY turns the Zune OFF.
NOTE: A Zune reset puts it in SLEEP mode then automatically turns it back ON. Like a non-destructive reboot. To reset: Hold Back button while holding Up button for 3 seconds.

When in ON mode:
By holding the play button for three seconds you put the player in STANDBY mode (NOT SLEEP mode!). THE "START GUIDE" IS WRONG OR MISLEADING AT BEST. See above to enter SLEEP mode.

When in STANDBY mode:
Pressing any button, plugging in earphones, or unlocking puts the Zune into ON mode. It takes about one second to go from STANDBY mode to ON mode.

I think it takes a lot more power to go from SLEEP to ON then STANDBY to ON. That may be why Microsoft recommends you let it go into SLEEP mode automatically in 24 hours.

If you are having problems with Zune turning ON by itself (as some have posted they have), I suggest put the Zune to SLEEP then set to LOCK.

Thanks for posting that LPD! I'm just in the midst of posting another tip on how to enter the sleep mode - I didn't know about the forced off mode until reading an article on Zunerama. Feel free to submit cool tips directly to us for front-page posting if you like.

I think mine did a reset on its own this past week. I thought it seemed kinda odd when I saw the big Zune logo show up in the middle of the screen...

Did it do that while you were using it, or after it had been sitting a while?

According to MS, in the unlikely event that you have not used your Zune for 24 hours it will go into sleep mode. When it wakes you will see the logo.

That makes sense now. I saw it again last night. I realized I hadn't used it for a day or two.

Default My weird Zune problem...

Ok, it all starts a couple of weeks ago- i left my zune connected to the power and to an fm transmitter... the next day i went for it and it didn´t turn on... it just stayed with the zune symbol on, the little bar charging, and then a one-second black screen and back again to off....

I tried to charge it but it didn´t work... it did work when i plugged it into the usb slot, but when i disconnect it, it goes back to what i recently explained... so i downloaded a new version of the zune software... and know it passes from the zune logo and the charging bar, to a grey screen that in three different languages tells me to Please wait, and then goes off again, and starts the same process all over...

What in the world is wrong with it? How can I fix it? I´ve already tried the sleep mode, on mode, and pressing all of the buttons together, but nothing seems to work...

Please help me!!

Thanks...
