You should try a hard reset:
  1. Press and hold the back button
  2. Press up until it reboots
  3. Then start pressing and holding the center "OK" button and pressing left on the control pad (you have to do step 3 when the screen goes blank but before the reboot process actually starts)
It's a bit tricky to get it right, so you may need to try a few times. Once it's finished, connect it to your PC and it will try to install the latest firmware again.

Unhappy Not working

Maybe I'm just special or I bought a special 4GB Zune, but when I hold down the back button and the up botton on the control panel it doesn't reset. When I charge my Zune nothing happens, when I connect it to my computer nothing happens. I've made sure the lock botton is not active and still everything i try results in absolutely nothing. Any suggestions... Please???

So it won't turn on at all, and it won't charge? Sounds like a defective Zune - hopefully you can return it to the place you bought it from, or call Zune tech support at 1-877-438-9863.

my wife's Zune8 just died as well...just sitting there doing nothing. To say the least I'm pissed. It is under warranty but there is no excuse for a device to die just sitting there doing nothing. It is like it slips into a coma. Not even an initialize will bring it back.

Hell my Zune 30 is more reliable....and it has moving parts!

So, I've had my zune for a while. It's a 30 GB and all of a sudden this morning it went to the reboot screen with the big ZUNE logo. The bar loaded like it usually does, but it has been stuck on that screen for a few hours now despite my efforts to reboot it. Is there anything that I might be able to do to fix it? Thanks!

Please check the front page - there's a big story about this problem, it's quite wide-spread.

Zune has three power modes: Sleep, Standby, and On. The following fully explains each and how to exit and enter each mode.

When it arrives it will be in SLEEP mode:
By pressing the play button it goes ON. When Zune wakes from SLEEP mode you will see the Zune Logo and a progress line below it that advances to the right as it boots up. Microsoft says it will go from SLEEP mode to ON in less than 15 seconds. It appears to take half that time. Microsoft uses the term SLEEP mode which means fully powered OFF. Moving the slide switch from Lock to Unlock, connecting, or docking puts Zune into ON mode. Plugging in earphones only turns it ON if in STANDBY mode.

To enter SLEEP mode either:
  • Do not touch Zune for 24 hours and it will automatically enter SLEEP mode (Microsoft recommends this method); OR
  • Hold Back button while holding Down button for 3 seconds. (Which works regardless of the lock switch position interestingly enough).
This REALLY turns the Zune OFF.
NOTE: A Zune reset puts it in SLEEP mode then automatically turns it back ON. Like a non-destructive reboot. To reset: Hold Back button while holding Up button for 3 seconds.

When in ON mode:
By holding the play button for three seconds you put the player in STANDBY mode (NOT SLEEP mode!). THE "START GUIDE" IS WRONG OR MISLEADING AT BEST. See above to enter SLEEP mode.

When in STANDBY mode:
Pressing any button, plugging in earphones, or unlocking puts the Zune into ON mode. It takes about one second to go from STANDBY mode to ON mode.

I think it takes a lot more power to go from SLEEP to ON then STANDBY to ON. That may be why Microsoft recommends you let it go into SLEEP mode automatically in 24 hours.

If you are having problems with Zune turning ON by itself (as some have posted they have), I suggest put the Zune to SLEEP then set to LOCK.

Ok... i've done this rite and when it restarts i see the zune logo and then a black screen and it's still the same as before.. my zune software wouldn't find it and plus when i press settings it freezes... this is pissing me off.. i Really need help with this.....
