Default Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0 Greets Windows Mobile; HTC Announced as a Major Partner

http://go.yahoo.com/

"Continuing to redefine the mobile Internet experience for millions of consumers around the world, Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) today announced the availability of gamma version of Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0 on Windows Mobile powered devices. Expanding this innovative service to the popular Windows Mobile platform will enable consumers to use it on 75 Windows Mobile devices from major manufacturers. In total the service will be supported by more than 175 different mobile phone models, including more than 100 models available today. Consumers should check for the latest device availability at http://go.yahoo.com. "Consumers have been clamoring for us to bring Yahoo! Go 2.0 to Windows Mobile devices since we launched the service less than two months ago," said Marco Boerries, senior vice president of connected life, Yahoo!."

I for one have not been clamoring for this. None of what Yahoo does really thrills me much. Like Google, these things sometimes seem to be just primitive add ons. However, before the flaming starts let me announce that we "Standard" users are going to get this first. It is available now for us and then in April for the "Professional" users. This seems to be a "Gamma" version. What the heck is that? Maybe they are just trying to one-up Google whose perpetual Beta versions are legendary.

Gamma refers to a third testing stage after alpha and beta. Until the recent explosion of beta releases, gamma wasn't necessarily uncommon. The modern-day equivalent is "release candidate".

Sounds like it misss one important feature: Yahoo Messenger.

I'm not going to download this one 'cause I already have Google Map and Widnows Live Search on my phone.

I can see ppl who have Yahoo mail would love this but those seem to be minorities as most ppl use gmails these days.

The Q version isn't available till April. I'll try it out, but I can't imagine it's going to stay on my phone for long.

Why is that? I see Q is listed there. I don't think your Q is qualified as "Professional" version

According to this it says "Coming Soon". I went to the download screen on my Q (http://us.get.go.yahoo/), and it says April.

Just download the 'GAMMA' version of Y! Go 2.0 for Windows Mobile. April is the official release date of the WM version.

Sorry, looks like only version you can download is for phones with portrait screen. Smartphones with landscape screens or PocketPC phones are not supported yet.

Actually, I have a version of Yahoo! Go for "Windows Mobile Professional" on my Qtek 9100 that was released last year, version 20060817a build 293. The only thing this build of Yahoo! Go does is launch Pocket IE for content, therefore I didn't install this on my Dash or BlackJack. It does help you sync your email, contacts, tasks, calendar, and photos. Consider this as an Yahoo!-branded ActiveSync push email extension for your device. Since I run my own Exchange server with push, I didn't find any extra value. However, those that heavily use Yahoo! email, this may be useful!

Anyhow, I am supplying a link for the last version of Yahoo! Go that has the Pocket PC and Smartphone installers for those who want to see if it's worth their time:

http://alpha.go.connect.yahoo.com/go/mobile/windows

Note the URL has "alpha" in it, and now we are up to "gamma".
